Army Spc. Kenneth Clifford Alvarez, a 23-year-old soldier from Santa Maria, died Friday in Afghanistan from wounds suffered during combat.
According to a Defense Department news release Sunday, insurgent forces attacked Alvarez’s unit with “an improvised explosive device,” killing both Alvarez and Pvt. Jonathon Michael Dean Hostetter, 20, of Humphreys, Mo.
Alvarez was stationed in Haft Asiab, Afghanistan. Both soldiers were assigned to the 2nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade at White Sands Missile Range, N.M.
