A Santa Barbara MTD bus was involved in a traffic collision with a car shortly before 10 a.m. Friday on Highway 217 at Sandspit Road, blocking the northbound lanes into the UCSB campus.

The bus was a 24x line that crashed head-on into a small red car, and Santa Barbara County Fire Department personnel and California Highway Patrol officers were dispatched to the scene.

David Sadecki, a public information officer for the county fire department, said crews used the Jaws of Life to exact the driver, a male in his 20s, from the vehicle. He suffered moderate injuries and was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for treatment.

There were no reports of injuries on the bus, which was carrying six passengers and the driver.

CHP is investigating the cause of the crash.

Officer A. Kansupda said quite a few collisions had occurred Friday morning, and he cautioned drivers to slow down.

the yellow line is on the bottom step of the bus, white line on edge of road way. Looks like driver of litte red car lost control on wet pavement.

This bus was going towards downtown SB from UCSB. The Hot Doggin Sports Car was going towards UCSB and attempted to pass a p/u truck that was going 60mph, by crossing 2 yellow solid lines, at higher rate of speed, during heavy rain. The car spun out of control and hit the bus head on. After the 100mph+ impact, the bus driver managed to keep his bus on the road during the 100feet or so that it took him to stop.. Just another rich college kid in his hot rod car, driving like an idiot!

Sean, if you are going to use words like “stupid” and “idiot” you should know how to spell “too” as in also.  It is not “to.”

Careloss…Must have been some very strong wind, don’t you think?  Once again MTD is getting the bad rap for some guy making the very bad choice of driving recklessly in the rain!!!  The driver should be commended!!!  No driver injury, no passenger injuries and no other cars involved!!!  WOW!!!  As always, kudos to the County Firefighters!!!

Can’t we all just slow down in life?

This is a common site for accidents.  An extension of the
existing 217 concrete divider would certainly prevent collisions and save lives.
