Letter to the Editor: Federal Government Failure
The Arizona legislature and governor just passed and signed a tough immigration bill. This bill makes it a state crime to be in the United States without proper documents.
Furthermore, it bans sanctuary cities that refuse to enforce immigration laws, stiffens penalties against illegal alien day laborers and their employees, and makes it a misdemeanor if immigrants don’t complete and carry registration documents. Good for Arizona.
The federal government has failed for years to control our national borders, at the detriment of our national sovereignty. It has become abundantly clear the federal government refuses to make the right decisions in terms of enforcing the laws and making critical reforms necessary to drive down illegal immigration.
The nonactions of Congress have been driven by their desire for votes, power and amnesty.
Why did Arizona pass this immigration law? Simply put, illegals were killing farmers, committing crimes, destroying property, bringing drugs and threatening people. Because our spineless government turned its back on the safety of Arizonians, the state had no choice but to pass a law to protect its citizens.
Unfortunately, we now see the disgraceful tactics of our president, liberals and pro-immigration activists.
First on their agenda, play the race card. Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton and others are unleashed and are inciting violence. Whatever happened to the rights of hardworking Americans?
It is time for Americans to wake up and stand up for their rights. It is time to protect our borders, stop criminal and drug activities along our borders, and to put the safety of America first. We need to write letters, call politicians and elect new members to Congress who support these views.

Your President Bush did nothing about immigration for his entire 8 years in office and now its all President Obama and the “liberals” fault? Oh, wait, Bush DID do something about undocumented workers - he tried to give 9 to 11 million of them amnesty just like Ronald Reagan did in 1986. Not sure why right wingers have such a blind spot when it comes to the failures of their much-heralded leaders.
» on 04.30.10 @ 03:33 AM
California has been in serious trouble since the liberal promise of 1986 Amnesty. The liberals promised if we gave amnesty to three million illegals in 1986 that it would never happen again? Well they lied we now have 15-20 million more hoping we do it again????????
History will repeat itself—unless we stop it..

Santa Barbara should take the lead on the Arizona immigration issue. What’s going on in Arizona is not acceptable. We should run ads in every Arizona newspaper inviting all of the unwanted illegal immigrants to come here to live in Santa Barbara. We could even sends caravans of busses to each city to pick up them up and bring them to their new homes. They would bring so much diversity and vibrancy to Santa Barbara. We would receive national acclaim for doing the right thing by our actions and not just our words.
» on 04.30.10 @ 06:46 PM
Concerned: Well, that’s essentially what Bush wanted - amnesty for 9 to 11 million undocumented to make big business happy. Unfortunately, as is often the case with Repubs and Libertarians, their ideas fall flat when faced with reality. Your heart is in the right place, however.

The life boat is full, and our kids have been pushed out of all low level jobs. Thats is a tragedy in itself, they have no work ethic from lack of jon openings..Sad we put law breakers in front of Americans. 15 million unemployeed Americans—15 million illegal alien law breakers..
Vote the Libs out if you love country…
Lets round them up

Yeah Empty its all Bushes fault. Global warming, 9/11, illegal immigrants, mortgage collapse, oil well fire, the wart on aunt Tess’s big toe, the Chilean earthquake, HIV, the Krakatau volcano eruption, the crucifixion of Jesus, the collapse of the Roman empire, Little Bighorn, the traffic light that went out last year on the corner of Carrillo and Bath, the discovery of metal, oh, wait a minute, that was good, so scratch that, yellow fever, flies, world war one, Kennedy’s assassination, OPEC, the migraine I got when I was six, your lack of intelligence, my ugly face, gout, the savings and loan collapse, the stock market crash of ’29, flatulence and lets see about 4,782,934 more things we can blame on ornery Bush.
» on 05.01.10 @ 11:56 AM
The low level of political debate that passes for acceptable dialog in the American body politic these days illustrates all too clearly what is wrong with the nation today. We have become a frivolous people incapable of soul searching or honest self-analysis and a bitter and uniformed mob without sufficient intellectual defenses to resist the nonsense we’re fed by our corporate news organizations even as we’re poisoning by the industries that own our elected representatives. The average citizen has repeatedly proven that they don’t know or care when elections are openly rigged, special interests are free to brazenly hijack the legislative process and things are routinely done in their name that should embarrass and horrify them. The thieves are running the asylum and the inmates are too busy clawing at each other’s faces to notice.
» on 05.01.10 @ 03:37 PM
You are absolutely right Empty, now practice what you preach. Show us the intellect you desire by interjecting some in your own responses. When some one asks you a question, even a simple one try using your mighty intellect to answer it. I have asked you several, fairly intelligent questions of particular relevance to various articles and as soon as I do you duck out or change the subject. Ok, so I use a rather nasty form of hyperbole in my presentation, that’s who I am, get over it and answer the damned questions!
BTW – Editor what in the world is so bad about calling Empty a BooB (Blame on ornery Bush)? I wasn’t referencing a body part just the buffoonery definition that word is used to connote. I call him all kinds of way worse stuff than that and he doesn’t seem to be very offended. So what gives? I really hate all this being civil crap. Crimoney, I have to do that all day long at work and home. Oh and can you make the Grid available to the larger audience of IE users? (grumble, grumble)
[Noozhawk’s note: What is this, pre-school? As for our News Grid, there’s some amazing technology out there; it’s too bad the manufacturer of Internet Explorer makes it so hard for you guys to use it. Try Firefox, Chrome, Opera or Safari. You’ll be so much happier. :) ]

Yep it would seem so.

AN50, empty is some poor sod that lives in his moma’s basement, or in the backyard living off of others. So you need to ignore sideline philosophers. As for someone who travels back and forth to Arizona I can tell you that this is all theatre. I’m personally tired of the running AK-47 gun battles going on up and down I-10, the hundreds of drop houses with good people being held, naked, for ransom. The sieve that is our border with these people literally destroying some of the most beautiful countryside with garbage and feces. The idiots climbing over my Arizona home walls, in the middle of the night, trying to rob me…until they feel salt pellets ripping shredding their ass - twice in the past two years. A Mossberg has a beautiful spread at 30 feet. The endless speeches from ignorant Californians and Easterners who have no clue. Calling for absurd “boycotts”. Just white noise.
Like the fools calling to boycott Arizona Tea when it is made in New York. Empty, I bet you thought Arizona Tea was made in Arizona. C’mon man admit it.
The fact is that 80%, it was 70% the other day, of Arizonans -and that includes Arizona Hispanics and Democrats, and a MAJORITY of Americans, have had enough.
It brings to mind the recent story of four Mexican idiots walking into a local 7-11 demanding money - in Spanish. LoL. After the smoke had cleared and the surviving illegal was being loaded into an ambulance he was overheard telling the EMT that they had forgotten that this was Arizona and NOT California. Three criminals dead and one paralyzed. All nailed by one CCW patron of the store. The only problem was that one survived. Too bad. You see, in Arizona, gun carrying residents are not considered criminals. Arizonans just want to defend themselves. In California the criminals carry and the citizens are sheep to the slaughter. Or, at the minimum, just ATM’s for useless bloodsuckers.
Weren’t these MASSIVE demonstrations amazing…wow, what a turnout! Millions…just millions…not. All wearing mass produced t-shirts and holding mass produced signs. But it was just a spontaneous demonstration…right?
Here is a real bubble buster. For those who are ignorant of the law, you may not realize that Arizona’s so called new law is and has been the law of the United States for a long time. For you illegals take note; It has ALWAYS been AGAINST the LAW to be in the United States ILLEGALLY and that includes ALL 50 STATES. If you are not a citizen, you are required to have “papers” declaring your status. If you want to live in the United States it’s not that hard, just do it the right way!! You will be welcome. But thumb your nose at our laws, you should feel the full force of those laws, and no leniency should be given.
The problem these idiots are having is tha someone finally said enough talk…time for action.
In hindsight what Gov. Brewer needs to do is hold a press conference and highlight all the benefits available to illegals in California. She can then offer travel vouchers to San Francisco, L.A., and emtyheads mom’s basement. I can safely assume he has never owned a home. Take them…they‘re yours. Daniel Petry
» on 05.02.10 @ 01:00 PM
Actually, folks, the Bush so reviled by many SBer’s proposed a solution to the problem of ILLEGAL immigrants several years ago. And PLEASE make the distinction between illegal and legal immigrants when accusing the other side of the debate of all sorts of heinous immmorality. It was nearly identical to what Obama is discussing now. But because he was Bush the outcry from the Left was so large that it didn’t get passed. Perhaps you forget that when Bush was in office the Dems were the party of NO and worked very hard to ensure that anything that Bush favored did not get passed.
Secondarily, the primary reason one might consider the Arizona law to be a good thing is that it appears to be influencing our Dem-controlled Congress to finally deal with the issue instead of worrying about losing Hispanic votes.
And finally, if one is truly interested in understanding all sides of a debate, as opposed to engaging in single-issue rhetoric, one might read Michelle Malkin’s column in yesterday’s News-Press in which she discusses the hypocrisy of Vincente Fox and quotes the Mexican laws concering immigration into Mexico and the treatment of immigrants in that country.

I’m with you Dan. Most of my experience with the illegal population is on the working class side. Forgotten in all this whipped up phony outrage is the drug war. And it is just that, war.
Also another good point from Johnny, is the lack of reciprocity on behalf of the Mexican government. Perhaps Mexico’s phenomenal inhuman corruption would end if we were not enabling it through illegal immigration.

The industy I’am in is really getting hurt, along with thousands of other from illegals aliens.
We get Workers Comp insureance-very expensive..
We get commercial auto insurance.
we get liability insurance.
we get health insurance.
We match social security tax.
we get bonded.
We pay med insuramce.
Companies are under bidding us by using illegal aliens, and not paying any of the above..Its not fair, and they need to be rounded up and deported. Its time to take your country back, or they will demand that we let them break our laws..As you see on T.V..
Time to Man up..

You are so right. These people are, for the most part, hard working and strong in conservative family beliefs. But I have seen what is growing in Santa Barbara and it is not pretty. And California citizens are unarmed. In Arizona we are definitely fighting a war.
My Arizona home is in a upscale area of town (Biltmore) and we nightly hear automatic weapons. The Feds, Obama, the Republicans, and the Democrats are a joke, these California appeasers are a joke. Anyone yelling at Arizona needs to spend some time on the front lines rather than just being another REMF. When I speak with my East Coast friends they just have no idea what is going on. Arizona HAD to do something to kick America into action; while trying to do what they needed to protect it’s people.
So my comment to any fool that thinks Arizona is wrong, or racist, or just a bunch of yahoos, needs to bend over, spread their legs and shove their keyboard up where the sun does not shine.

Did anyone see the illegals demanding their rights in OUR streets==WOW.The law breaker are peasants who want to be legalized. remember 1986—the lie—
California needs Arizona law now—send them back finally—stand up people.

Classic “white people” behavior! “We want our cheap produce, inexpensive restaurant meals, low cost hotel rates and dirt cheap cruises but please, oh please, make all the brown people go away the minute they’re finished serving me.” First, all you right wingers, understand that YOUR party, the always duplicitous and dishonest GOP, fights to keep up with big business’s endless demand for el cheapo labor WITHOUT benefits. Second, if you want intelligent immigration reform stop pointing fingers at anyone including “liberals” and Democrats and demand answers and legistlation that will actually work. How about getting beyond the simplistic worldview that Republicans seem incapable of turning away from and read up on this issue. Here’s a business-friendly group called Americans for Immigration Reform (AIR) that is claiming to be seeking real reform that won’t hurt business and the economy (so you know a good percentage of the people in this outfit are Repubs, just like you folks). http://americansforimmigrationreform.com/myths-and-facts

First off, I’m black and I happen to agree with Petry, AN50 and the others. I consider most liberals to be racists. I consider them the only true racists in these comment threads. I can spot them a mile away. They are the ones that say things like, “classic “white people” behavior” or “please, oh please, make all the brown people go away the minute they’re finished serving me.”
Now I know that as a black man, I must adhere to the liberal-socialist line, or else your “blackness” will be questioned. These racist liberals that comment here have their templates that they work off, and they proceed from those assumptions like a looped recording. What, you are a black man who thinks that the illegals are illegal? You think Arizona has done the right thing? You agree that both parties and all the “I just want to pat your cute little head as I help” liberals are the worst kind of racists?
You think our elected officials should do a little more than pay lip service to their responsibilities? Learn your place uncle tom! Now the next time you use a phrase like classic white people you are just shouting out that you are a racist.
And remember Ray, you’re not allowed to think in terms of ideas and principles if you are a member of an “oppressed class.” You must think along racial and group-think lines like those of us in the enlightened Party or the liberal bench warmers commenting here. We are objective after all and just want to protect you current and ex-slaves.
Send the illegals home, jail employers that use illegals, deny illegals any – and I mean any – benefits. Refuse them entry into our school system, our medical care system. Deny them access to anything that makes their life in our country worthwhile. Show them how to come in legally and then we will greet them as brothers. Right now they are criminals whether they are 4 years old or 80.
» on 05.02.10 @ 10:57 PM
Its like working with a special needs class, seriously. This is not a “liberal” issue or wingnut issue! Your moronic party is at least as culpable as everyone else. Lord, the right wing is tone deaf and blinded by accusatory nonesense. Oh, THAT’S why Fox News is so popular among a certain kind of intellect. Pass out the coloring books, Rush.
» on 05.02.10 @ 11:46 PM
I always find it revealing that verbal, mental, and physical violence always comes from the Marxist side of the equation. The same side that decry’s the “violence” of the right. You know…the same ones that clean up after themselves when they leave a protest versus throwing trash cans into windows. They use such compassionate terms as Tea Bagger, wing nut, moronic, special education, retarded, special needs class, racists, coloring books. They are truly the chosen ones to lead our nation into the light. A true Birkenstock community of light and knowledge. As Ray says…the true racists. I love playing with them eh empty? Even when they stalk me and threaten my family. Daniel Petry

For those who want to get truly educated visit the Federation for American Immigration Reform. For those who cling to left-wing self-serving useful idiot lies… We’re just going to out vote you this time. Automatic gunfire near the Biltmore in Phoenix??? Good God! Time to get some ammo! I’m even more sympathetic to Arizonans now!
» on 05.03.10 @ 10:32 AM
Well, for what its worth, let’s try this again. The immigration problem has not been created by “liberals” or any one specfic group. It is the result of those two ol’ timeless constants of our society - American greed and willful self delusion. Republicans and the GOP have played ever bit as much a role in getting to where we are today than everyone else. Furthermore, Republican presidents including Bush have never made an honest attempt to solve this difficult problem any more than recent Dems. You want all the undocumented workers deported and stopped from entering the country ever again? Fine, I’m with you, but unless you get buy-in from agriculture, ranching, the hospitality industry, manufacturing and other interest groups (and the Republicans within them) you’re jut going to come up with lame policies that put local authorities and the police in a no-win position. I know this would be a new concept for you birthers and climate change deniers but think ROOT CAUSE. That tends to accomplish more than anger, lies and pat answers that make you feel good but get anything of value done.
» on 05.03.10 @ 11:08 AM
empty, you were doing ok - and I agreed with you on the part that there is plenty of blame to go around. Then you start to flame. I now realize that this is genetic with you. You can come up with rational proposals but you can’t resist pushing people away by using inflamatory descriptions of those that you are trying to convince. You are truly like the scorpion and the frog…it’s in your nature. You are doomed to never ending frustration because you will never be able to convince anyone who disagrees with you. It’s sad. Have a great week son.
» on 05.03.10 @ 12:26 PM
Petry: Oh, and YOU don’t use inflammatory language when you talk about Dems and liberals? “Scorpions” comes to mind, not to mention dozens of examples of hateful and deliberately provocative statements calling into question the patriotism, intelligence and manhood of your political opponents. If you want to call a truce to such tactics why not start with your next column?
» on 05.03.10 @ 08:39 PM
empty you are dishonest. Petry has never used the term Tea Bagger, moron, derided disabled people by calling those that disagree with him “special needs” (you are in good company because your hero BO has senior staff calling people retarded). You yell racist when you are so obviously racist. Ray has you pegged so well on that. You say petry uses hateful speech when he actually has always used facts to support his articles. But you could always write your own article and submit it couldnt you?
Here is the crux of the matter. With one simple signature Gov Brewer has out maneauvered not only the fed hacks and the open borders crowd she has initialed another law that will get approved by the courts. Because there is one thing that most of you libs do not know. Arizona has passed three other illegal alien acts in the past year and every one of them was challenged and the illegal open borders crowd was crushed. Literally crushed. These people are true Americans they know that the feds and the libs can easily be out played by simply pointing out their irrational approaches to reality. Way to go Arizona!! And I LOVE YOUR NEW GUN LAWS! Go get em boys.

You all can continue to attempt to make immigration reform an issue with an axis of “liberal” vs. conservative all you want. It isn’t and trying to make it such does no one any good, least of all your hope that big business will jump in an support your viewpoint anytime soon. “Its the economy (of cheap labor), stupid.”
» on 05.04.10 @ 03:02 PM
Empty you are the most partisan commenter here and have the worst case of BDS I have seen. You are right, this is not a partisan issue even though the left is as culpable as the right. This is an issue about fairness, sovereignty and slavery. Imbedded into this mess is a violent drug war where innocent civilians, both legal and illegal are being killed. It is serious business now. When you make the decision to go down to the “wall” and hire an illegal for cheap labor, you are a criminal. You are perpetuating slavery and racism. That goes for any employer doing the same. When you join the idiots dancing in the streets protesting federal law you are propagating racism and slavery. You are a criminal. Tolerance for this kind of abusive racist behavior on the part of the “open borders” crowd is now zero. You are all criminal human rights abusers and your actions are akin to treason. Since the federal government is incapable of protecting our borders any more we the people will have to do it ourselves (right on Arizona!). Those of you here illegally, notice has been served. To protect your life and that of your family go back home and come through the front door like we require every one coming here. The “illegal” welcome mat has been removed. You are no longer welcome as an illegal here and those hiring you or doing business with you are not welcome either. Notice has been served to you as well. Get the picture?
The open borders crowd screams racism every time you mention immigration control and yet it is their actions and policies that are racist (thanks for pointing that out Ray). We have one of the most powerful tools a human can have in this country; it’s called your wallet. Stop buying things you know are wrong, it’s that simple. Pay for legal help and the illegal problem goes away. These poor souls caught in the barbed wire are coming at your request, the fault is yours. Stop pointing fingers and put your damned money where your mouth is.
» on 05.04.10 @ 03:41 PM
Welcome to the Right Wing echo chamber. Its all about anger, emotion, misplaced blame and an inability to see beyond a bitter jingoistic nationalism. Facts, reality and proof of what works and what doesn’t are their enemies. Also, I don’t have Bush derangement syndrome; I just find very few Republicans I meet are either not very bright and/or informed. Sometimes one of these characteristics, but never both.
» on 05.04.10 @ 04:10 PM
Government always hires 3x as many employees as it needs, and pay itself 4x what their worth..Not the shrpest tools in the shed working for government, or on welfare. They need gov like a baby needs milk, this is a sad and pathetic bunch..
» on 05.04.10 @ 04:36 PM
It may be true that the U.S. government is horribly inefficient, overstaffed and too well compensated. That’s not the case in most industrialized nations but if its worse here it may be due to the corruption that is now endemic to the system and a populace that is generally poorly informed and not very bright when it comes to public policy issues. Certainly widespread hatred of government is largely an American phenomenon and probably contributes to the anger, ignorance and poor morale that seems to have crept into all aspects of political discourse.
» on 05.04.10 @ 06:27 PM
Really Empty? Where is the anger, the emotion, the misplaced blame, and inability to see beyond jingoism? You are the quintessential artful dodger, never answering what was written but charging off in some other ad hominid attack.
Want to redeem yourself? Answer the following:
Is it a crime to knowingly hire an illegal alien?
Is it a crime to encourage someone to break a federal law?
Is allowing one race or ethnic group to skirt federal law, but no one else, racist?
Is it racist to always see others through their ethnicity?
Does that make multiculturalism racist?
If you can answer these I will provide more. Remember there are five questions so I expect five cogent answers. If you look up anything from the DailKoz or MoveOn then you are disqualified.
» on 05.04.10 @ 07:03 PM
Is it a crime to knowingly hire an illegal alien? Of course, and a law that is broken daily by businesses in agriculture, hospitality, manufacturing, construction and landscaping. NOT ALL OF THESE BUSINESS OWNERS ARE REPUBLICANS.
Is it a crime to encourage someone to break a federal law? Yes, but in what context is your question asked. The RNC has encouraged precinct officers to break the law by denying citizens their right to vote, resulting in a fraudulent, unelected president for two terms. Where is the accountability?
Is allowing one race or ethnic group to skirt federal law, but no one else, racist? Undocumented workers are from dozens if not hundreds of different nations so your question lacks relevance to this issue.
Is it racist to always see others through their ethnicity? Yes, but NOT ALL RACISTS ARE REPUBLICAN nor are ALL REPUBLICANS RACIST.
Does that make multiculturalism racist? Or affirmative action? These questions are debated all the time and we won’t solve them here I suspect.
» on 05.04.10 @ 08:32 PM
Ok, not bad even with your constant idiotic partisan crap, Empty.
So again I ask, where is the anger, emotion, misplaced blame and jingoism?
That’s four more questions and I should see four new answers.
Of course the discourse would be incomplete if I did not comment on your last answers.
You are correct it is a crime to knowingly hire an illegal alien; therefore my comment that those who do are criminals is correct as well. Now unlike you I make no distinction with regard to political affiliation of said criminals. Unlike you I don’t give a crap what party you belong to. Wrong is wrong, period.
Yes you are correct that it is a crime to knowingly encourage the breaking of federal laws. And again I make no distinction with regard to politics. Wrong is wrong.
You blew this one. If it is wrong to give special treatment to one ethnic group then it is wrong to give special treatment to ANY number of ethnic groups. This is why affirmative action is racist and bigoted; it sets in law the unfair treatment of different groups. It is the antithesis of democracy where all are treated equally under the law. It is relevant in the illegal immigrant issue because we now have 12 million illegal aliens, mostly of Hispanic decent, living in our country with no regard to federal law, or the unfairness to say Asian legal immigrants. Why do we give Mexican fence jumpers a pass but no one else? Because we are racists, that is we favor or discriminate based on race.
You are correct here too. As stated above anytime you favor or disfavor based on ethnic or racial background you are practicing racism.
And whether they are debated or not you can still form an opinion on this last question. Mine is they are racist and divisive. These programs may have been devised under good intentions but they are the most harmful and destructive policies this country has instituted since slavery.
