Letter to the Editor: California’s Out of Money Again? Really?
I read reports that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger might be crawling, hat in hand, to Washington, D.C., begging President Barack Obama to cover the $21 billion budget shortfall expected in 2010. It’s not an unexpected picture to see a California politician prostrate themselves before the alter of the feds.
Congratulations, California: You are now a Third World welfare state. What an excellent job we — and the politicians — have done.
Our children will be proud.
We have taken an education system that was No. 1 in the nation and, with the cooperation of teachers unions, an ineffectual administrative staff, politicized education theories and unregulated illegal alien participation, beat it down to just above Haiti in results. Progressive warehousing at its best. Now let’s take one of the best transportation systems in the nation and drive it to new levels of disrepair. Chase the real producers of wealth to adjoining states. Mix in a suicidal tax, spend and environmental political philosophy and — wa-lah! — you get California 2010. A shining example of what the nation can expect to see from progressives.
But let’s look at recent history to see where California is going and where this once great nation is heading.
Imagine a wealthy nation with vast agriculture production and seemingly endless farmland. A massive river system and ports that beat anything in the world. Natural resources that are massive. A level of industrialization exceeding most nations. An educated and literate population. A single national language.
Then a new president is elected under a banner of fundamental change with an appeal to the middle and entitlement class. Changes include mandatory pension insurance, mandatory health insurance and support for low-income housing construction to stimulate the economy. And similar to most fascist governments, corporations are bought and run by the politicians in a private/government partnership. The electorate allows the state to assume economic control of a vast percentage of the country’s wealth. The national constitution is ignored. The newly elected leaders then begin assessing new taxes to fund their efforts.
With an ever-increasing flow of funds into entitlement programs, the government’s payouts soon surpass the value of the taxpayers’ contributions. It quickly goes beyond an underfunded Ponzi scheme to something criminal.
The death knell for this nation’s economy, however, comes when this president aims his populist rhetoric at the nation’s rich. This targeted group is then expanded to cover most of the middle class. They become an enemy to be defeated and humiliated. The size of the government bureaucracies explodes through massive programs of social spending and by encouraging the growth of labor unions.
High taxes and economic mismanagement take their inevitable toll even after this president is driven from office. But the damage is done. His populist rhetoric and contempt for economic realities lives on. The government continues to spend far beyond its means. Hyperinflation explodes, the final stage of a process of trade protectionism, redistribution of wealth, income based on wages rather than assets, and ever-increasing federal intervention in the economy.
This nation rapidly begins the practice of printing money to pay off its public debts, crushing the economy. Inflation hits 3,000 percent, reminiscent of the Wiemar Republic. Food riots are rampant. Stores are looted. The country descends into chaos.
A government-controlled privatization effort to rescue pensions is attempted. But those funds are also raided by the government, the monies replaced by the nation’s defaulted government paper. This fiscal irresponsibility induces a national economic crisis as severe as any great depression. Revolution soon follows.
America in 2013? No. Argentina, a century ago.
If what I described above sounds like the America of today, then you are not alone. History has shown us time and again that progressive populist plans never work. Reality is never part of a progressive’s lexicon. It teaches us that ObamaCare, cap and trade, the TARP slush fund and unfunded entitlement programs will be utter, complete disasters. Today’s progressives are guilty of more than stupidity; they are attempting to enslave future generations to poverty and misery.
The only bright side of this picture is that they will still be around when it does. And the posters will no longer be the image of Obama fashioned as a Che Quavara look-alike, but wanted posters.
So go ahead, Arnold. Beg.
Daniel Petry

Fantastic letter. Argentina was called the Switzerland of South America in the early 1900s, and at that time was wealthier than most European nations. Certainly a lot of parallels between Democratic Progressivism and the Peronism that destroyed the Argentine economy.
I’d like to see a debate between Daniel Petry and Joe Armendariz on one side, and Lois Capps and Jerry Roberts on the other.

I couldn’t agree more b_reynaldo. The only thing I have a problem with is your liberal choices for the debate. There would be no contest between Daniel / Joe and Lois /Roberts on the other.

They keep sucking money out of the middle class, forcing them out of the state, crippling businesses, forcing them out of the state to give to the poor. Who is supposed to provide them jobs and thereby produce revenue for the government? They keep bringing in MORE poor by lack of immigration enforcement and attracting them with handouts to get more votes for the liberal legislators. What would you expect? Where does it end? In the toilet of course, they won’t give up until we have the same corrupt government and poverty ridden environment as Mexico.
2010 elections here we come! People are suffering too much, losing jobs, houses until we wake up and kick out the tax and spenders and entitlement minded legislators. Ahhh-Nold turned out to be a big girly man.

Hats off for Mr. Petry. Our clue-less Congressional leadership(there’s an oxy-moron) and radically, liberal President are, in fact, sucking the life blood out of our once proud country. Just like our Californian Senators and Assemblymen and Women have here.
The sadness is that, as Daniel infers, the majority won’t know what hit them until it’s way to late.

How much do the want—We already pay 40-50% in taxes—What would our founding fathers say—Cut Gov 40% wages and staff and rebuild—because the union have taken over our government—ban unions in Gov—they work for us as civil servants already—

Capps would never agree to debate Joe Armendariz. Who is Daniel Petry?

Lois Capps could not debate anyone. She is a very sweet lady, but has no business being in Congress. She strictly tows the party line, and all of her ‘press releases’ are straight from the DNC. If you were to ask her the details of the TARP bill or “Health Care Reform” she would not have a clue as to what they really said. She just votes the way she is told.
Prediction: Expect to see a mass exodus of businesses and middle and upper income individuals, especially retirees, from California in the next 2 to 3 years. There are many other states that welcome investment and do not tax the hell out of people to pay for failed social agendas. California was once the Golden State, the greatest state in the nation. It is a hopeless cause. The is absolutely nothing that can save California. It is too far gone, choked by taxes, regulations, inane policies, ‘progressive ideas’, and ‘politically correct thinking’. Its all over for California.

But didn’t Californians get a new and improved Republican governor who was going to solve these problems by ending the car registration fee/tax and cutting the “fat”? And wasn’t prop 13 a cure for the fiscal evils mentioned? And wasn’t Schwarzenegger? And how about W’s deficits? Oh dear!
Looks like there is the same great fantasy being sold by Mr. Petry and Sarah Palin. I don’t buy it.
ps- the entitlement class includes who, Mr. Petry? Are bankers, Enron types, Oil companies, war profiteers, pharmaceutical companies, and Reagan’s savings and loans included? That is: Are the rich included or only those who work for them for low wages?

@youareclueless-simply relating historical facts? Really? “California: You are now a Third World welfare state.” nope.
“this president is driven from office.” nope.
Reality check. It’s an opinion piece. A slightly cloddish one at that, with all its straw-man crystal ball gazing.
But then again, you bought it.
And if I am a Peronista that makes you ... General Jorge Rafael Videla, leader of the “Dirty War” that disappeared about 30,000 people. Nyaa, Nyaa.

Excellent piece Mr. Petry. I definitely would love to see you debate Capps, she would be a deer caught in the headlights. Sad we actually have people like her, and Pelosi showing the rest of the country how ignorant we have become. Like all addicts, California has to hit the bottom before it can begin to recover.

Mr. Petry, thanks for writing about Argentina instead of Rome. I get tired of reading screwball analogies to Rome; Argentina is at least different. Plus with Argentina we only have to pretend that we live a century ago, not two millenia.

You know…every once and a while someone expresses themselves in a way that really hits home and is right on target.
I’m an independent and I have to say that I voted for Obama. Please forgive me. It was not only a wasted vote; it was a total abrogation of my franchise to vote. My god, did anyone really know who this man Obama was? I didn’t, nor did I really ask, and I beg your forgiveness. I only hope that people such as Mr. Petry continue to stand up and hold the line against such as this man, his associates from Chicago, and those politicians (from both parties) in our own State house.
Our beautiful State is totally bankrupt; employers are leaving in droves and yet they still want to tax us. Our children suffer with an education system that has failed them at every juncture. And the teachers even refuse to teach our Constitution!! The other day I asked my 14 year old daughter about the Constitution and the Bill of Rights…she responded, “What Constitution and what is the Bill of Rights?” It brought tears to my eyes, I truly cried. All that blood spilled so that my beautiful baby could be taught nothing about what made our country so great.
What have we done? And why have we let these criminals into our lives. I even see some of them posting here. We have to stop this. We WILL stop this. Thanks Mr. Petry.

After serious consideration I think I like Ahamilton’s mindset.
A second stimulus of say 800 billion this time, pass the health care bill of 2.5 trillion (that includes the 800 billion of un-funded mandates to the States), open up the border for restriction free travel and make every one a citizen with full rights, pass cap and trade, close down the coal industry, ban domestic energy production, close all nuclear facilities, pass the free choice act, and pass the FCC bills that would guarantee total censorship…oops…I meant total diversity of the airwaves. We need to stop these right wing, Glenn Beck loving, Sarah Palin admiring, hate mongers…
...and especially attack obviously concerned mothers who just want the best for their children.
Why? Simple. We need to bankrupt America. Seriously. If we can make this country insolvent we can then bankrupt the States. Let’s don’t worry about Cali we already succeeded there, so we just need to work on the other 49. We can then remove the USD as the reserve currency for the global economy. That would cut off the U.S. from reserve sales. Take that all you evil capitalists! Keep this in mind because it’s important in this plan.
Once we have done that we can truly transform America. We now have a clean slate to start from. The money’s worthless, the economy is well on the way to central control or straight barter, the States are fending for themselves, small companies have been destroyed and people are using greenbacks for fuel. Now’s the time to strike. Sorry “Upset but hopeful” one must trample the weak and hurdle the dead for the cause.
Ok…now don’t get too excited, we have one small hitch. We need the guns. We can’t truly control people that disagree with us when they can shoot back. Oops…now wait a minute…that might be a problem. Let’s think about this now. Democratic progressives don’t own any. And these hateful gun owners say things like, “ram it down our throat in ’09.” They are so rude.
What can we do? I know! We create a civilian corp of volunteers…let’s call it AmeriCorp…oh oh oh…wait. We can name it SEIU or ACORN and fund it like the U.S. Army. They can go around and pick up the guns. Not including us - our vast brainpower is needed elsewhere. We did it in New Orleans. We can do it on a national scale. YES WE CAN!! Sí, Se puede!!
We’ll even give the volunteers their own shirts to wear. Right now I’m thinking brown but rainbow might work also, and even give them armbands with pithy logos, (there’s one that I think is appropriate but it was taken over 80 years ago)...all right; let’s don’t worry about that right now.
But wait…the people that have the guns don’t want to give them up; and OMG they shoot back, silly fools actually believe that the Second Amendment was designed to protect them from people like us. That’s ridiculous, don’t they know we are here to help? But there are more of them then there are of us. OK guys, we have to think this out a little better…but we’re making progress. One step at a time boys…we’re doing great so far. Now about that Amnesty program…

Hopeful. You have to understand that Democratic progressives find it difficult to deal with facts. You know when you hit a nerve when they can only attack. Bottom line. Great article from Petry.

AHamilton, they mostly just confuse things, but then as a sufferer of intellectual narcissism, I say that about a lot of people.
To Marion, liberals do not have compassion. That is a cover for the most conceited philosophy on earth -steal from some to give to others so I don’t have to be concerned about anyone but myself. Now throw in some self loathing, lack of courage (oh boy Ron Dexter is really going to be upset I said that!) and a tendency to give up, throw in the towel and cry like a baby and you begin to understand why some say liberalism is a mental disorder (jeeze my liberal friends are gonna be so mad when they read that, but then I’ve said it to them before so they should know it’s coming).
Dan wrote a great article and some commenters here understand what he is saying, others out of partisan lemming’s disease just follow the same ole talking points or as BNeilson points out attack out of fear. We are broke, we don’t produce enough to pay for what we want and until we stop acting like a bunch of selfish kneejerk idiots we will crash and burn. I’m not making this up. Unfortunately other civilizations have plotted a similar course and of course they are no longer here. We don’t have to. We can do it differently but to my liberal/progressive friends, quit giving into this self defeating philosophy. Nothing we have achieved was done so because people didn’t think it possible. Stop being so damned pessimistic and listen to what we are saying, cut the crap and start being a little more rational. Stealing from those who can to give to those who won’t is insane.

Dead on, Mr. Petry. Those who now try to blame Arnold for not solving the problems left by Gray forget that when Arnold was elected, ALL of his concomitant voter initiatives that were on the ballot and would have provided legal bases to address the budget issues were defeated. The problem is not Arnold; the problem is the schizophrenic voters of California, where all the men are beautiful, all the women are strong, and all the children are above average. This beautiful state is doomed to die of freespending progressive foolishness; you can thank the professors at Berkeley and similarly oriented institutions..

Yeah. Everyone who thinks in right-wing code words that carry no meaning agrees 100%.
Yes, the voters are schizophrenic. Deficit spending to cut taxes doesn’t balance the budget. That is what Republicans have been doing. Now it’s time to find another solution.
Close prisons? Stop maintaining roads? End the postal service? Let poor children starve? Fine the people who hire illegal immigrants way more? Make traffic ticket fines related to the registration fee of the car? Put disabled people into the streets? Stop moving water to So Cal?
‘Cut the fat’ is hogwash. So is “freespending progressive foolishness” without adding “free spending right-wing foolishness and corporate welfare”. Maybe you support free spending right wing foolishness?
The right wing supposed ‘conservatives’ have gotten practically everything they wanted for the last 30 years; Reagan, Deukmejian, had 8 years each, Davis had 4, Schwarzenegger will have 8 (Republicans at the federal level, too) and still blame progressives for all the problems. It’s pathetic.
So was Daniel Petry’s article.

Tam, thanks as always for the response. I have no heart burn at all with your pursuit of alternatives, just your priority over which ones. That is another discussion. My concern is with this attitude of retreat. Low energy lifestyle is something we in the lower socioeconomic classes practice daily. We take offense when pointy headed liberal elites tell us to back off on consumption. If Al Gore were to park his jet, ride a bike and live in an apartment he might make a better example for his low carbon/low energy lifestyle pleas and free up energy for the masses. Tam, the working class folks are getting very tired of always sacrificing for the elite. Don’t preach to us about low energy, practice it and show us how you think it works. Do it for a while and see how that works for you first. We, who make the things you use, fix the things you break and clean up the messes you make already have a low energy consumption lifestyle by economic necessity.
As I said earlier, we need to look at making MORE energy available to MORE people and cheaper not the other way around. I want to see all the people on this planet enjoy the comfort and convenience that AL Gore enjoys. That is part and parcel of my religious faith, looking out for the other guy. If we can land a man on the moon, no small feat indeed, we can solve the peak oil problem, but mark my words here, Tam, retreat is NOT an option. Building windmills may be a great conservation tool or stop gap measure but our efforts should be on annihilating the points an21 made about elitist control of resources. Our country enjoyed the most prosperous growth and the most escalation of living standards for all when we allowed the market, open and free, to distribute cheap abundant energy to everyone. Yes regulation is necessary to ensure safety and competition as well as keep the liars, cheats and thieves at bay, but should never be used to control output like the liberal elites want. To that end let’s stop this harkening back to the dark ages where those of us at the bottom spent most of our time in survival mode and instead look at what we can do to make things better than they are.
That will take a lot more energy than we consume now and the best way to ensure that we find that energy and distribution is abundant and cheap is a capitalist free enterprise system. It worked for your parents and ancestors here and will work for you too if you drop the liberal global socialism crap and this awful capitulation to a lesser standard of living. You can submerse yourself in defeat and fear, but I know we can do it. We just have to shake you doomsayers off our legs so we can march FORWARD.

Hey folks Liberals take the Land Of The Free and think they can give it to everybody. Got News for all the Liberals they can distribute all the money in the world equally amongst us all and the same people will get it back again. And when you get a president that has no one on his staff that has not even run a candy store what do you expect, our country was not created by over educated non producing no vision no idea people. You better look back in history and see who did what and what administrations were the cullpret to most of our demise. You will find both parties have there own——to own up to and we as voters need to clean house and if we leave Pelosi, Boxer, Capps, and Fienstein in office we get what we deserve….......
