The Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) is Santa Barbara’s
local, not for profit, public transportation system. The MTD provides a
reliable, safe, comfortable means of mobility to those who lack other
transportation, including students, the elderly and individuals with
disabilities who have access to bus stops. MTD also provides an
attractive transportation option for commuters and shoppers who may
otherwise drive cars.
A seven member board of directors governs the MTD. Two members are
appointed by the County Board of Supervisors, two are appointed by the
Santa Barbara City Council, one is appointed by the Goleta City Council
and one is appointed by the Carpinteria City Council. The seventh
member, also known as the at-large director, is appointed by the other
six members of the board.
The MTD covers approximately 52 square miles in the southern area of
Santa Barbara County, between the Ventura County border to the east and
Winchester Canyon at the western edge of Goleta. The District
encompasses the communities of Santa Barbara, Goleta, Carpinteria,
Montecito, Summerland and Isla Vista.

Street in Santa Barbara.

The Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition, founded in 1991, is a county wide bicycling advocacy organization. It consists of dedicated volunteers who maintain contact with City, County and regional transportation professionals, elected officials, educators, bike clubs, employee transportation coordinators, bike shops, bike manufacturers, and other advocacy groups.
