Mark Cromer: An App For Betrayal
If the United States’ “drug war” was indeed a real war, then the announcement by a UC San Diego research team that it has developed a smart phone program to help guide illegal immigrants over the U.S. frontier would be nothing less than an act of high treason.

But since the half-hearted efforts to staunch the flow of narcotics flooding the United States is little more than a long-running government parlor game that empowers select circles in Washington, enriches the Mexican cartels and ensures a steady supply of high-grade dope to keep inner-city and rural America perpetually stoned — this new “app” for illegal border crossers is merely another pedestrian betrayal of our sovereign law that is so commonplace today.
Hailed by its creators as a “Transborder Immigrant Tool,” the application apparently integrates GPS technology and other features into a Motorola cell phone that will help clandestine immigrants better navigate around obstacles, whether they are rough terrain or the Border Patrol.
Ricardo Dominguez, a faculty member at UCSD and one of the creators of the application, blithely asserts that the high-tech tool is an act of “electronic civil disobedience,” one he no doubt feels will offer a small assist to what he sees as a global struggle for social justice.
Indeed, during an interview several years ago, Dominguez declared his support for a “manifestation of global citizenship on a very local level. It is part of a call for global health care, global rights to education, a living wage as a global right, global law vs. Phantom-States that commit every resource to creating a neo-liberal Empire of Disorder of unregulated and mobile market forces that polarize social differences among and within societies.”
While such cant is ethereal enough to bill (or is that bilk?) the students at UCSD for another 40 percent tuition increase, I wonder how it will play with the American workers who now fill the unemployment lines?
Real “civil disobedience” in today’s climate would be to program the phones with a feature that alerts ICE as soon as the illegal immigrant is on the job site, so the employer can be arrested as the illegal worker is deported.
Of course, that’s not likely to happen, but one has to wonder what other options Dominguez and his team of designers might program the application to produce for northbound immigrants intent on breaking into the United States?
Certainly a popular feature for newly arrived female illegal immigrants would be information on how to use the United States’ policy of birthright citizenship to obtain immediate welfare payments and other taxpayer-funded assistance, as well as maps to conveniently located maternity wards.
The app might also come with an emergency “Busted” feature: a button that illegal immigrants can push if apprehended by law enforcement that will activate a computer-generated voice over the speaker phone informing officers — in English — that the immigrant will not speak with them and demand access to the Mexican consul.
Maybe for a few bucks extra, the researchers can offer the narco mules shuttling dope across the border a premium upgrade, a UCSD stenciled handset that can display hi-res, up-to-the-minute satellite imagery of their select drop-points. Maybe even choice street dealer locations in the event the smugglers want to offer a direct-to-consumer sale.
These features would put the project a lot closer to the truth of what they are doing than some self-aggrandizing terms like “electronic civil disobedience.” But I do think they came close to correctly naming their effort to further undermine the American worker and erode the security of our communities. I would just shorten the title to “Transborder Tools.”
Dominguez and his fellow travelers at UCSD — well meaning as they may indeed be — are deploying technology that could have come right off the Christmas wish list of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and big agribusiness hungry for cheap labor. And a U.S. government that has long abetted their illegal immigration scam to import that labor.
They may have developed the app, but it is they who are the tools.

A real nice use of California student tuition fees!- “enlightened” UC research team developing cell phone tools to help terrorists and lawbreakers evade border security. Excellent use of tax resources! Nothing like a publicly funded academic institution doing research that benefits low budget terrorists and lawbreakers. Its a nice touch to pretend borders don’t help keep the US secure. Its great when some academics don’t like a law- they think you should just violate it. If you see an academic driving a car that you don’t think is “green” enough- just steal their car and then vandalize it- you’re just showing “civil disobedience”. The 32% increase in UC student tuition fees should help pay for their continued UC “research”.

If Prof. Dominguez believes in global citizenship, maybe he should ask the rest of the globe, and not just California taxpayers, to pay his UC salary. I don’t think the UC administration or faculty understands the damage transnational leftists like Dominguez are doing to its reputation and willingness of Californians to fund the university.

The Dominguez team is probably not doing as much damage to the US as wall street and war profiteers do. Not even as much as our so called “patriots” who got us into the Iraq War. Not even as much damage as the silly Republicans who voted for Bush/Cheney. Those student fee increases will no doubt create more ignorance to support such right wing policies.

Note Careful’s response. If you haven’t got a good explanation for something that appears to be a wrong: blame it on Bush and Cheney…. Twenty years from now I can hear the echo from Careful: It was all caused by Bush and Cheney.
And twenty years from now, given the historical literacy of people like Careful and his ideological cohorts, the answer will be: “who’s dat?”

The numbers of illegal immigrants here, is far to many in one swoop to remove? Nor could we bus them out the country, but the cost would be another insane cost to bare by taxpayers. But if it was compulsory by government laws for every employer in America to install E-Verification, knowing that their was mandatory prison and fines.? Millions would start to leave, because jobs would fade away in time Another method would be making it a first class felony, instead of a stupid civil slap on the wrist. It really up to US taxpayers to fight for your quality of life, SO START WRITING 28 CENT POSTCARDS AND WARN THE INDIFFERENT POLITICIANS, THEY WILL BE HUNTING FOR THEIR OWN JOB?
Although E-Verify is a very good illuminated measure, as seen through the eyes of every jobless American. It is a successful program that implements the need to remove millions of illegal immigrants from the work force. It is still under peril of being scratched-out or at the least, slowly dragged down to the faltering level of the local law enforcement training program 287 G? There are and have always have been powerful forces at work to reduce immigration enforcement, even as other entities are trying to weaken health care legislation. Personages in high places, whether it’s the multi-billion dollar health insurance industry, or pull-down-the-border fence extremists whose agenda is welcoming anybody who can slip past our border agents.
Then we have the accumulation of impoverished illegal aliens, who are in direct competition with our own poverty stricken society. They have not only stolen jobs from blue collar workers, but are taking jobs in the white collar business world as well. This is why we need a moratorium on immigration, to give America time to climb out of this gigantic recession. Illegal immigrants must be deported through the computer mechanism of E-verify, and later when employment rises and the economy is stable, build on the 1986 Immigration act (ICRA). With amendments to Simpson/Mazzoli bill that allows a system of only accepting certain categories of scientific and professional immigrants. We can no longer accept the destitute, uneducated who have sucked the state treasuries of California, Arizona, along with other states dry to the point of bankruptcy.
President Obama and his pro-illegal immigrant disciples have promised another Immigration reform package. The 1986 Act was signed in to law by Ronald Reagan, but was never—ENFORCED—and so that is why we have absolute crisis and an incessant flow of illegal foreign nationals. The numbers are estimated in entrants around 20 and 30 million, not what open border and liberal activists expect us to believe? NO IMMIGRATION LAW EVER WAS MEANT TO WORK? Its only because Sen. Harry Reid, Speaker Pelosi made an error of judgment that E-Verify was not tabled? Today everybody knows about E-Verify, owing to the wealth of information that was exposed by Internet bloggers. It has become a sharp stick in the eye to parasite businesses and every movement in the open border culture. Have not the taxpayers been paying the full burden of subsidizing free health care, education and the tentacles of ever spreading welfare programs for illegal families? America is perceived to be a passionate people, a charitable people, but when we must endure the hardships sprung upon us by other foreign countries population, that this is too much financial baggage to carry any longer.
In Arizona for instance where a newsworthy report has been released:
Governor Jan Brewer and Republican leaders lashed out last Tuesday at the League of Arizona Cities and Towns for its lawsuit challenging a new law in order to eliminate illegal immigrants receiving public benefits. He said,
“At a time when Arizona is suffering from budget deficits of unprecedented proportions and the state is struggling to meet the basic needs of its citizens, it is outrageous and shocking that the League of Cities and Towns would challenge legislation designed to protect the very entities that it was intended for,” Brewer also stated Arizona voters have shown several times, starting with the 2004 election, that they do not want taxpayer money going to help those in the country illegally. AS HAVE CALIFORNIA VOTERS, WITH THE FILING OF PROPOSITION 176, TO STOP WELFARE GOING TO ILLEGAL ALIENS? IT WAS SILENTLY DERAILED—NEVER TO REACH THE HIGHER COURT OF THE LAND.
This proves beyond any doubt, that millions of illegal immigrants are siphoning off government entitlements meant for the legal inhabitants across our country, which is causing near economic collapse of state, county and city treasuries.
Where another MASS AMNESTY is concerned, it is not those already illegally living here—but the unfettered volumes of humanity who will try to steal into America, before the—FINAL AMNESTY BELL—TOLLS? If the border is far from secure now, who will stop those who decide to immigrate here? The scenario is scary and beyond imagination and a harbinger of uncontrolled overpopulation. A boon to businesses and anti-American radical consortium’s, open border subversives, the wealthy and certain Democratic lawmakers looking for extra votes.
Those who believe in America’s survival, without OVERPOPULATION as stated by the US Census bureau better read facts, not the lies at NUMBERSUSA. Those who want details of corruption in WASHINGTON and state government go to JUDICIAL WATCH. Overpopulation, traffic hell should go to CAPSWEB. Other sites of interest on Immigration enforcement is ALIPAC and AMERICAN PATROL. We the people have the ultimate power to throw out anti-sovereignty incumbent politicians. Call and command these do-nothings to—STOP—this facade at 202-224-3121.

If Cromer’s allegation is correct, then the U.S. Attorney for southern CA should sit
down with the professor, and explain that “aiding and abetting” illegal activity, or
consciously acting as a willing “accessory” to illegal activity, could be construed as
federal crimes.
If any smuggler - of drugs or human cargo - is then caught in possession of the
professor’s device, the professor (tenure, and all) should be prosecuted, and sent to federal prison.
We’re at war on two fronts, and still trying to track various covert terrorist
activities.
If the professor doesn’t like federal immigration policies, he should ask Congress to change them.
But if he acts unilaterally, against existing law, he should face the consequences.
If any part of the professor’s operations were federally funded, UCSD should be closely audited to make sure they are a responsible federal contractor, with proper oversight and supervision of public funds.
The professor himself should go on the Orange List, that would flag him for any future request for “research” funds.

Undocumented migrants work in, for example, meat packing plants, garment industries, migrant labor industries. THESE ARE NOT JOBS THAT AMERICANS WANT TO WORK! But, how easily we forget in times of economic downturn….
Furthermore, targeting undocumented migrants as scapegoats for the nation’s problems during times of economic downturn is nothing new—recall immigration policies during the Dust Bowl, Operation Wetback. How easily we forget our history when the profit margins are in decline…
The truth is that undocumented labor is directly recruited by corporations in the United States, yet the media never reports on this fact.
Undocumented labor is largely used in the construction industry, garment industry, and to clean up after natural disasters in the United States—would you want these jobs when you could make more collecting unemployment?
The truth is Americans do not want the jobs that undocumented people work. Recall the Postville Iowa immigration raid: homeless people from Texas wouldn’t even work in the meatpacking plants doing the jobs that undocumented workers performed daily. At a cheaper rate. In dangerous conditions. For long hours. Without breaks.
Another example: after Hurricane Katrina New Orleans experienced an influx of Latino migrants. Why? The Latinos, largely undocumented, cleaned up/are still cleaning up after the horrible natural disaster. Yet, these laborers often remain faceless, nameless.
We value labor, but not the bodies that are responsible for that labor.
You may wonder who paid for these people to clean up New Orleans? The federal government hires subcontractors through corporations such as Halliburton. These subcontractors then hire undocumented labor—an inexpensive and easily exploitable work force.
Like Professor Dominguez, I value human life over political scare tactics and nationalist rhetoric. Spreading undue fear through this type of journalism should be recognized as a form of domestic terrorism. The tool saves lives. I find it disturbing that capitalist rhetoric has so permeated Mark Cromer’s subconscious that he overlooks facts, the value of human lives, and historical president. I believe we should be thanking Dominguez for his efforts and bravery to fight for his ideals amid so much fear mongering ahistorical “journalism.”
We must first and foremost assert that the purpose of the Transborder Immigrant Tool is to save lives. Every year hundreds if not thousands of people die crossing the heavily policed border zone—many of these mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, grandmothers, grandfathers, daughters, sons—were directly recruited via billboards or subcontractors to work in the United States.

Thousands of people die crossing the border every year. It is land that originally belonged to them, stolen through conquest. Now, while policies like NAFTA facilitate the free flow of money across borders to enrich the few, the masses left impoverished are prevented by police, fences, barbed wire, guns, and U.S. racism from crossing those same borders in search of a livable life. As U.S. policies have destroyed the economies of many Latin American countries, we should not be surprised when the refugees of empire return to the heart of empire. Dominguez is a hero, and his team’s new app will indeed save lives. Cromer can sit from his place of relative comfort spewing hate all he wants. How many lives has he saved? None - in fact, his xenophobic hate-mongering has probably cost people their lives, in the form of hate crimes, deportations, and starved & dehydrated bodies in the desert.
As a former resident (and taxpayer) of the state of California, and as the child of an alumna of the UC system, I am very pleased to think some of my tax dollars went to Dominguez’s team. California’s prison population is booming, and it had always distressed me to think that my money was going to support that system, instead of to California’s underfunded school system. So, Mr. Cromer - stop speaking in our names. Many people celebrate the bravery of this act of electronic civil disobedience and find that it is you, Mr. Cromer, who is the “tool” - a tool of racism and a tool of corporate interests. Look in the mirror and stop spewing your hate at these upstanding global citizens.

It is a shame, Mr. Cromer, that you did such a haphazard job of researching your story. The purpose of the TBT is not to assist migrants to maneuver around obstacles. The main purpose of the tool is to direct migrants to emergency water stations. There are also prerecorded recitations of poetry, but I assume that is not controversial.
My organization, Water Station, places such emergency water supplies in the California desert. While our board has not determined whether we will fully participate with the developers of the application, I have met with some of the developers and I am convinced that they are developing the phone app as an emergency life-saving measure. We would not cooperate with applications that did what you describe, even if such uses were technologically possible.
I believe that the folks from UCSD share with us the simple desire to reduce the number of people who die in the desert attempting to cross the border. To that end, our outreach in Mexico is and will be limied to warning people of the dangers of the crossing and trying to dissuade people from making the attempt.
