The Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society will host the Santa Barbara County portion of the statewide campaign A Day Without a Bag on Thursday.

The communitywide event will help develop positive eco-friendly behavior and use of sustainable products. With the help of more than 35 local businesses, city government entities, educational institutions and nonprofit organizations, the Ocean Futures Society will educate residents about the effect of single-use bags on the environment.

Volunteers will hand out about 6,000 reusable bags at more than 24 locations throughout Santa Barbara County.

Students from Santa Barbara High School‘s Dons Net Café will distribute bags from 10:30 a.m. to noon in front of Community West Bank, 1501 State St. in Santa Barbara.

You people have too much time on your hands. Shopping bags are a grain of sand on the beach of plastic used in consumer goods and packaging. Outlaw bags, everybody feels warm and fuzzy, politicians get kudos for “saving the environment” and nothing is done about the problem. Typical feel good, inconvenience- everybody politics…

How about making it easier to recycle bags instead of banning them?? They are recyclable and reusable. I like ‘em - I don’t want to take three trips to my car parked a mile away, up and down my stairs to carry in my groceries and I don’t want to carry reusable bags everywhere like a progressive ex-hippie goofball. If you want to do it voluntarily be my guest - don’t inconvenience me to please a bunch of brainless progressives that have a psychological need to feel good for do nothing symbolic acts at everyone else’s expense and inconvenience! Think of the handicapped and the elderly.

I have yet to hear of a fish caught in a plastic bag… unless being brought home from the pet store. By the way, how are we going to do that now?
