Santa Barbara County District Attorney Christie Stanley will retire within two weeks because of uncertainties about her health, according to a statement her office released Monday.

Stanley has been battling breast cancer and recently suffered a broken hip.

She has served in the District Attorney’s Office for more than three decades, and was elected to the position of DA in 2006.

“Christie wishes to thank all those who have supported her during this incredibly difficult time and for the tireless efforts of her staff, at all levels, on behalf of public safety and the citizens of Santa Barbara County,” said a news release issued Monday by Deputy District Attorney Josh Lynn.

In October, Stanley appointed Lynn as acting district attorney. Lynn is running against Senior Deputy District Attorney Joyce Dudley for the DA seat in June’s election.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Christie Stanley and I truly wish her the best with her health.  However, I am amazed that for the better part of three years she has gotten a pass for her absence as DA.

Where is the outrage and editorializing from Joe Armendariz and Lanny Ebenstein on the fact that she has been collecting tax payer dollars this entire time while doing absolutely nothing?  Why would they, as tax payer advocates, remain silent on this issue while the DA’s office goes to pot?  And how come they say nothing about Josh Lynn’s complicacy in all of this.  If Josh really cared about the office he would have called for her resignation months ago instead of accepting his sweetheart deal to “take over” her job.

Her handling of this, and I am sympathetic of her illness but at some point you have to do the right thing, is definitely unethical if not outright fraudulent.  If this was anyone else Josh, Joe, and Lanny would be calling for her head on a platter.  But as one of the only Republican women elected officials she gets a pass.

As someone who voted for her I am ashamed of my conservative brethren in not holding her to the standards we would of any elected offical.  Elected office should be respected at all times and accountable not just because of their party affiliation.  I submit that if this was Lois Capps, Doreen Farr, etc. the outrage would be deafening.

I’m pretty sure you mean either 30 years or 3 decades rather than: “She has served in the District Attorney’s Office for more than 30 decades”

When the topic of giving a pay raise to DA Stanley came before the County BOS in 2008, the Board wisely voted to not grant the request.  As it turned out, their action minimized the taxpayer’s losses in this matter.

Former District Attorney Tom Sneddon strongly supported his hand-picked successor, Christie Stanley, to become his successor.  District Attorney Stanley now strongly supports her hand-picked successor, Josh Lynn, to become her successor.  As experience shows us, hand-picked successors don’t always work out.  It’s time to for new leadership and better vision in our District Attorney’s Office…..

Like Ted Kennedy, the murderer, was a great person to keep on the taxpayer’s dole for 30 decades (kidding.)

Come on. Knock off the Republican bashing. I too wonder if it was wise to keep Stanley in place but I don’t know how much it did/did not affect her job. Having met her I saw a very committed woman.

Dazed and confused, do you know some FACTS about how she didn’t do her job?

If not, then shut up.

Seems like Christie’s main job was leadership and making tough calls.  I don’t hear complaints about how the DAs do their jobs. Look at all the gang creeps getting convicted (yay!)  Marty Blum worked through her cancer, maybe Christie wasn’t so lucky.  Doesn’t mean she didn’t give 110%

SBNative

What possible fact do you need other than Ms. Stanley was quite admittedly not able to go to her office more than very infrequently for a long period of time?

I do feel very sad for Christie and her health problems, but it is nonetheless quite difficult to carry out the obligations of your elected position when you are not able to get to your office for weeks, even months on end.

This is neither bashing anyone nor bashing any political party or point of view, it is merely stating a fact.

Nice way to spike her pension.

Why should anyone expect any “outrage and editorializing” from Joe Armendariz and Lanny Ebenstein?  They are hypocrites again and only care about partisan politics and not really saving taxpayer money.

Dear Mr. Egenolf,

Dazed and Confused states “But as one of the only Republican women elected officials she gets a pass.”

REALLY? You mean Capps-the-Clueless isn’t getting a free pass? Blum-the-Dumb isn’t getting a free pass? Boxer “don’t M’am me” isn’t getting a free pass. ETC. ETC. AD NAUSEUM.

My point was to knock off the partisanship. I admit, I’m not sure if it affected her job. Given the era of telecommuting though, who’s to say Christie didn’t “mastermind” many a prosecution case from the homestead? I really don’t know.

I do know I see a LOT of Democrats in this town/county/district/state getting a free pass… IF we’re gonna go there.

We’re not gonna go there in 2010.

For starters, if you are not present as a Department Head, someone else on the District Attorney’s staff has to go to Department Head meetings, pertinent Board of Supervisor meetings, and represent the District Attorney’s office at other meetings and conferences in addition to doing their own full time job.  And do this for weeks and months and years on end.

As a Dept Head, you’ve got performance reviews to write on your top executives.  Except you are not there to write them, much less observe the performance of your top executives in the first place.

As a Dept head, you lead your Department in budget reviews, and consult with others in your Department about them.  Videoconferencing certainly exists, but you’ve got to be in an office to do videoconferencing.

As a Dept Head, you are critical for setting the vision of the Department, acknowledging training needs and fufilling them,  making discipline decisions when necessary, networking with other Department Heads and State organizations, etc.  A second in command can try to do this for awhile, but it’s catch as catch can, and stuff falls off the plate.  There is no substitute for a full time Department Head, except on a 1 week vacation basis.

If everything goes smoothly in the absence of the elected District Attorney, then why do we need one in the first place?

Good question: If everything goes more smoothly without CONGRESS why do we need them.

But I didn’t say I knew for sure it didn’t infringe on her job. I objected categorically to the “republican” reference when in fact, I am SURE the DA Stanley is not the only one in this County that c/b accused of being on the DOLE.

Capps - can you hear me now?

Let’s get back to the facts at hand.  Josh Lynn has stated that he should be able to “complete his term“…well that term ends when Stanley is no longer DA.  End of story.  His “position” as what ever he and Stanley have decided to describe it is fictitious at best.  She is/was the DA for the past 3 year.  What she did prior to that is irrelevant given her performance as DA.  I will not, as others have done, give her a pass because of her illness as sad as it may be.  She was elected and entrusted to be a public servant.  That comes with great responsibility.  I don’t car about her political affiliation.  What I do care about is honoring the public’s trust.  She violated it plain and simple.  There’s no way around it.  And Josh Lynn by standing by and doing nothing to suggest that she could do better to live up to what the voters of Santa Barbara County elected her to do is disgraceful.

The way I see it, is that this was purely a career move on Lynn’s part.  Seems to me he could give “f” all about what is best for the DA’s office and the residents of the county.  His actions, or inactions, have shown that he only cares about what is best for his own self interest.  Other’s may want to defend him and taut is “appointment” as something “from on high” that should not be questioned.  But for those of you who believe that I would encourage you to dig a little deeper and look at the facts.  Stanley is an embarrassment to the office, plane and simple.  Given her regard for the position the electorate placed her in, all her decisions should be questioned.

That’s all I have to say on the issue you fill in the blanks…

I am currently on sick leave - this means I receive HALF my regular salary, and - thank god - my insurance is still active. Meanwhile my workplace has to pay someone else to do my job in the interim.. My sick leave will be “up” in 25 [I think] weeks. i hope I’ll be back at work long before that… My point is the City is already cash-strapped. We cannot afford to pay twice for one job. It’s true that cancer is debilitating. But she’s 3 YEARS INTO THIS; she should have stepped down long ago… there would’ve been a way for her to get a pension and insurance, but this is milking us DRY.
Bythe way I have not heard ANYTHING positive about this Josh Lynn dude - not on the posts here, and not out and about town. Why don’t we try to get someone in that job who has NOT been picked by Stanley? She’s been absent for so long she does not have what it takes to decide her successor.

It’s too bad that, as an important local official tacitly acknowledges that she may be
losing a valiant battle against a catastrophic illness, people are again pointing fingers and politicizing a personal tragedy and a critical law enforcement setback.

If the County wants to appoint an honest-broker DA to fill in the rest of Stanley’s
term, could there be a better choice than bringing back Pat McKinley, who served as
the office’s #2 for many years prior to his retirement 18 months ago?

That would allow Stanley to focus all her strength on recovery or a new remission, and let the DA’s office resume peak operational efficiency, without getting more distracted by the June primary face-off between Lynn and Dudley, the two in-house candidates.

Hopefully, all our thoughts and prayers go to Stanley at this tough time, regardless
of politics, ideology, or pay scales.

If you’re gonna go the route of picking someone to baby sit that’s outside the DA’s office how about you pick someone who hasn’t endorsed one of the candidates.  McKinley’s already done that so he’s out.  Got any other brilliant ideas that don’t “disenfranchise” Josh?
