Santa Barbara City Council candidate Lane Anderson kicked off his campaign recently by arming himself with gloves and plastic grocery bags at Stearns Wharf for beach cleanup.

“We kicked off our campaign by making the city cleaner,” Anderson said. “I hope the community appreciates a campaign that removes litter from their neighborhood instead of putting the endless junk mail, door hangers and slick brochures on their property.”

Anderson said he promises to run a different kind of campaign and has vowed to take a 40 percent pay reduction if elected. He says he’s a “candidate without party, money or phone.”

He also has refused any campaign contributions. “The only way the public can put a stop to the escalating cost of running campaigns and the consequent power of the special interests who fund them is to vote for a candidate who has not taken money,” he said.

Anderson is a 31-year resident of Santa Barbara, a Vietnam War veteran, and he has helped organize numerous local groups, including the Veterans For Peace and Vietnam Veterans Against the War. His priorities for the city include environmental protection, more affordable housing and strengthening the local economy.

Anderson believes in fossil-fueled landscaping, the enforcement of banned gasoline leaf-blowers, and using natural cooling methods in city offices and properties instead of air-conditioning units.

To combat the escalating costs of housing, Anderson said something has to be done about all of the SBCC students who have “impacted our affordable rental markets severely.” He has proposed to “press for (the) use of imminent domain to build an SBCC dormitory on the Carriage Museum property and relocate the museum to (a) more suitable property for carriages.” The Carriage Museum is adjacent to Pershing Park.

Anderson said a tax on alcoholic beverages is vital for the city to get control over its budgetary issues.

“My proposal is for a tax on all businesses that dispense alcoholic beverages,” he said. “This would include not only bars, but also stores and restaurants.”

Anderson said that half of the $34 million police budget is used on policing alcohol-related incidents and behavior, and therefore justifies his proposed tax increase.

“I think the public will understand and approve as long as it is fair and broadly applied,” he said.

CORRECTION: That would be fossil-FREE landscaping, which is the practice of creating and maintaining landscaping without the use of power tools and equipment. Fossil-free landscaping is one of the few human practices that can actually go beyond sustainability and past carbon-neutral to be truly productive of food, climate modification, wildlife habitat and many more benefits to society and the natural world, while sequestering carbon to become carbon negative, helping to reverse global warming. Radical? No, just common sense. We could use Lane’s wisdom on City Council.

What? Why is he using plastic grocery bags instead of cloth ones to clean up the beach?

Let me put on my truth unmangler helmet and interpret Lame’s campaign for you:

I am conducting a low profile campaign, but I want to make damn sure everyone knows about it.

I am refusing any campaign contributions, because nobody is giving me any anyway.

I will not be sending out endless junk mail, door hangers and slick brochures, because I can’t afford it, so I may as well act like it’s intentional.

I want all the city employees to sweat without air conditioners and you’re next, air conditioning along with any other creature comforts will be illegal. I will be living in my boat so what do I care.

I am a “candidate without party, money or phone.” so good luck contacting me if I get elected. What do I care what you think anyway? I have an agenda.

As if you aren’t paying enough in taxes already I will institute a party tax and a tax on the homeless alcoholics. The resulting effect will be more homeless and more partiers trying to relieve the stress of higher taxes. It is a perpetual self feeding cycle that will cure the budget problem.

$34 million police budget is used on policing alcohol-related incidents and behavior, so surely raising the cost of drinking will stop people from drinking (yeah right)

“The only way the public can put a stop to the escalating cost of running campaigns and the consequent power of the special interests who fund them is to vote for a candidate who has not taken money,”

The other way is not to vote for Lane, because he IS HIS OWN a special interest.

Lame will be to busy writing resolutions to shame the troops and impeach Bush to run the City. Why would he need a phone or money to do that?

Enough of the tax and spend blue line union shills. Santa barabar has had enough—weddings for gays, blue lines, bankrupt pensions, over paid civil servants. lazy workers in government.

So which alternative candidate has no agenda?  Which is not representing some “special interest”?  Lane has a point of view that is worth hearing and worth considering.  Certainly his proposals would help pull the mask from the city’s masquerade that it represents anything other than the downtown merchants and the tourist industry in general.

The City does not need another liberal running the show and create new programs (= taxes). Isn’t this the guy who have given us “Arlington West”? What a disgrace. Just say no. Stop the madness.

I haven’t heard an idea from a candidate yet that will make life better for the residents of Santa Barbara.

Which candidate is not representing some “special interest”? Glad you asked - try Justin Tevis. He doesn’t have any money either, which is why we haven’t heard anything about him.

Which is not representing some “special interest”? One that is representing the GENERAL interest of the PEOPLE! One that represents freedom from government tyranny and control. One that understands that bigger government means less liberty. One that understands that more taxes means less jobs more poverty and less liberty. STOP FEEDING THE GOVERNMENT MONSTER votetevis.com !

Tevis is the representative of people who have jobs and no time to be political activists or promote organizations that TAKE from the government, rather than contribute. (such as SBCAN, PUEBLO Fund for Santa Barbara or other nonprofits that promote waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer money)

“I just feel there isn’t enough hard-working citizens represented in our government. Politicians get caught up in the system and whichever organization is backing them. It’s time for people from the private sector to step up, do their duty and get out,” Tevis said.

I agree about fossil-free landscaping and I, myself, use no power tools. However, more than that is needed on the Council.

I, attending some city advisory group and council meetings, have never seen Lane at any of them. Nor have I, with many hours watching public access, ch 18, ever seen him speak on issues of public concern. Nor has he attended and spoken at any of the workshops, including the two recent ones, on the major issue before Santa Barbara now, PlanSB, the review of the General Plan that will be in effect for 20 years.

He may be a nice guy - and Arlington West was a fine public service in educating about the war in Iraq—but this is a local election where local issues are what are important—- and it is going to be one of the most important ever, with a major change of possibly 4 (of the 7) seats on the council.

We need council members who have shown a commitment to city issues. Traipsing off to San Salvador, election watching is fine, but he’s had no history of local civic participation besides the commendable picking up trash on the beaches.

“a fine public service in EDUCATING about the war in Iraq”??

Arlington West was nothing but a shameful exploitation and mockery of the deaths of US heroes for the purpose of an anti-war protest. It was disgusting and embarrassing, and did nothing but help undermine the image of the United States of America in front of international tourists, putting our troops in further danger. It was a one sided display as there was no similar display of the deaths of the 3000 who perished in the World Trade Center. Lane should be ashamed of doing this to his “brothers in arms” he is nothing but a traitor seeking personal attention and gain, as evidenced by his run for office.. Lane is now a bum living off the government instead of contributing. Fossil free landscaping is not going to do a whole lot to move the planet away from the Sun, and certainly is no reason to vote him onto the council.

Land is another tax and spend liberal with a very narrow agenda.  Notice that strengthening the economy comes third on his priority list, while two big spender issues place first and second.

Vote no.

Not exactly showing ecological wisdom to be using plastic bags for his beach cleanups! Along with his boat, he does own a house in the Marine Terrace section of the Mesa where he does grow vegetables organically so he does walk at least a little of the walk. Only his neighbors would know if he uses any power mowers or other power tools.

As for taking less salary, the salary of council members is set by the City Charter as a result of a city wide vote. All council members are welcome to give away part or all of their salaries if they don’t need it - and he probably wouldn’t since he probably has ample retirement funds from the post office and the military - but he could not in fact take a 40% pay reduction with a change of the charter.
