Santa Barbara Runner Struck by Van, Dies of Injuries
The woman who was struck by a van early Saturday while she ran with a Santa Barbara Team in Training group along Las Positas Road has been identified by friends as Carolyn Samuels, 66, of Santa Barbara.
A funeral service will be held at All Saints By-the-Sea Episcopal Church, where Samuels was an active parishioner.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society‘s Team in Training provides training to run or walk a whole or half marathon. Nationally since 1988, more than 275,000 participants have helped raise more than $600 million for research and patient services.

A horrible tragedy for all concerned. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family and friends. Maybe more drinking check points on major roadways would help.

Carolyn had recently signed up to serve in AmeriCorps, our nation’s domestic Peace Corps, as a reading tutor to help at-risk youth. Her commitment to help others is part of her legacy and an example to all of us that have had the pleasure to know her. Our prayers and thoughts fo out to her family and friends.

I think all the bike paths in Santa Barbara need to have 6 inch high yellow dome lane markers, spaced 2 feet apart, between the bike lane and car lane. These are great because bikes can cross them, and cars can too in an emergency, but if a car drifts into the bike lane the driver gets a very bumpy wake-up call. This sort of structure probably would have also saved the boy killed near La Colina last year, and the man biking in Old Town Goleta the year before, etc…
If Santa Barbara City and County are serious about reducing fossil fuel use, they’ve got to make commuter biking safe. Pedestrians and bicycles are NOT compatible with cars and should never share the same space.

Dear Jill, Jane and Jeff— We had many wonderful times with your Mom. Early morning runs training for the San Francisco and London Marathons, fun parties and trips—we were training for Catalina in 2009. She was a treasure. Our hearts are broken.
Love, Angela and Pat
