Members of the Santa Barbara Tea Party & Culpepper Society joined other California tea party organizations in Los Angeles on Saturday to rally against big government. Health care was a hot topic of opposition, as was the government’s growing role in the banking, finance and automotive industries.

Protesters from Carpinteria, Goleta, Santa Barbara and Thousand Oaks made their voices heard through signs such as “TEA=Taxed Enough Already” and “Obama-care makes me sick” while also carrying American and “Don’t Tread On Me” flags.

Similar rallies were held across the country Saturday, including a massive protest in Washington, D.C., that drew hundreds of thousands of people to the west lawn of the Capitol and spread from there. The demonstrators voiced a litany of complaints, including President Barack Obama’s health-care plan, his $787 billion stimulus package, the House-passed “cap-and-trade” energy bill, the $700 billion Wall Street bailout and the previous Bush administration.

The Santa Barbara Tea Party, “a nonpartisan grassroots group of citizens dedicated to defending the principles set forth by America’s Founding Fathers,” was part of the West Coast Tea Party at the Federal Building in Westwood that drew what organizers estimated to be 4,000 to 5,000 protesters. A variety of speakers, such as politicians, veterans and actors, encouraged Tea Party participants to not give up the fight against government control and to resolve to continue fighting for their freedom.

“I don’t want government baby-sitting me,” said Daniel Davies, 29, of Carpinteria. “I feel I need to have my voice heard against government taking over my life. It’s now or never to stand up.”

Contrary to reports of so-called “angry mobs” at Town halls, the West Coast Tea Party represented a diverse group. Old, young and families gathered peacefully along Wilshire Boulevard with their signs, encouraging drivers to honk for liberty.

The rally ended with a Patrick Henry actor declaring “Give me Liberty or give me death.”

We are not the “fringe.” Over 2 million people gathered on 9-12 to make their voices heard (compared to a paltry 14,000 who gathered for Obama in Minnesota.)

We are not the fringe. And we are speaking up. I also agree with one of the signs: NBC, ABC, CBS - do your jobs! Enough partisan “reporting.”

Americans need to wake up and vote people out of office who don’t have the same views as the general public. It boggles my mind that people like Diane Fienstein, Barbara Boxer, and Louis Capps represent us. That have none of my interests in mind. I want less government and less taxes.

Of course we don’t need a police force, firefighters, public roads, public schools, a military, a court system, a border patrol, a coast guard, etc. We can to pay for all that ourselves out of our trust funds.

All we need are assault rifles, a bunker and enough food to protect us from man and nature. I say no taxes or a government selected by one Supreme Court vote. (If you remember.)

Look at the great job Wall Street, the banks and shipping American jobs overseas have done for us.

Long live freedom from taxes and government!

And thanks Alissa for such an objective / non-partisan report.

How to write an attack letter to the editor

First call your target names. Think up a cute degrading one.

Question their legitimacy, intelligence, loyalty, nationality, morality and/or patriotism.

Degrade your target with guilt by association to well established demons; Hitler, Saddam, leftists, liberals, terrorists, union bosses, illegal, etc.

Insinuate anti-Americanism, deviousness, greed, laziness, stupidity, naiveté

Find well known quotes to apply to your target; “birds of a feather”.

Quote experts and feel free to cherry pick or distort what they said.

Use authority. Create statistics to prove your point.

End with a grand slam at “all of those __________” that are destroying our society, nation, freedom, morals etc.

And certainly don’t ever read or listen to the other side.  They might confuse you.

The old teabaggers again? They do not want to pay for anything people that want no government in their lives but expect high quality public schools, first rate law enforcement, perfect roadways and public transportation, a top notch fire department, emergency rescue team etc etc etc. These are the same people in which many receive medicare and social security but want no government in their lives. They will receive a flu shot regulated by the CDC and Health Department but want no government in their lives.  The same people that received a tax break under Obama. The same people that do not realize their total taxes as a percentage are at near historical lows.

You get what you pay for. Sure there is some waste that needs to be addressed but that will still not account for the lack of revenue and the deterioration of the commons.

“Of course we don’t need a police force, firefighters, public roads, public schools, a military, a court system, a border patrol, a coast guard, etc.”

Thank you for outlining a MINIMAL government and the ONLY role of government, Ron. Nobody has suggested eliminating government entirely Ron and Local, so your points are… pointless. The things you mention are exactly where the lines need to be drawn. We don’t need the government to babysit us, only to protect us. Public safety and infrastructure and that’s all. If the government had not robbed us of our Social Security “investment”, if taxes and spending were not so high that we could have saved for our elder years, perhaps we would not need Medicaire and Medicaid, because we could afford our own insurance.

Funny how some people assault the so-called “tea-baggers” with unsubstantiated claims that would imply radical beliefs.  I haven’t heard anyone say we don’t need police, fire, etc. critical services from government.  The complaint is about OVERinvolvement (blue lines anyone?) by the nanny state.  And Dexter, the term “teabagger” conforms precisely to your point about making up a “cute” name, although I’d bet that 90% of the population miss the real insult in this one.

Oh I love this, if you don’t want higher taxes then you obviously don’t appreciate the service government provides! Ronny and Local, I’m going to make sure that every business you deal with understands that you will never, ever question the price you pay private service providers because you want the best. What a ridiculous summation from the local liberals, A) never question how government spends your money and b) bag on name callers while calling people names.

I would be more comfortable with the purported “non-partisan” nature of this crowd if they protested some excesses of government in its “law and order” mode.  Such as Federal and state agency spying on citizens, extended and excessive incarceration, loss of due process, presence of US military in more than 180 nations around the world, imposition of US business economic policies on other nations.  As it is it seems that the agenda of these groups is hand in glove with the NRA, Chamber of Commerce, Insurance Industry and its lobbyists and the fundamentalist religious movement that thinks that conflagration in the world will hasten the 2d coming.  Just coincidence or does the kind of freedom it is fighting for just for their pet causes?

To John Q, who wrote: “Americans need to wake up and vote people out of office who don’t have the same views as the general public.” We already do that. It’s a common tactic for a vocal minority—in this case the tea-baggers—to claim majority status and wonder why government isn’t more responsive to their views. To all the John Qs out there: Wake up yourselves! You’re NOT the majority, we are. We voted for Dianne Feinstein [spell your Senator’s name correctly], Barbara Boxer and Lois Capps [ditto your Representative’s name]. Yes, they DO have our interests in mind. WE are the majority. Get over it.

While a few naysayers to health care reform get the focus,  we recall that thousands protested in Santa Barbara and millions around the world against the ill fated wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and we were ignored by Bush and Cheney, so why shouldn’t President Obama ignore the small and shrill Tea Party protestors?

WAR MORATORIUM & TEEN MEMORIAL
AT SANTA BARBARA CITY COLLEGE

A mock cemetery of the U.S. Military Teen casualties is planned in Santa Barbara, California on Friday, September 18, 2009, part of the National and International grassroots War Moratorium Movement calling for the immediate end of war and occupation from Iraq, Afghanistan,Pakistan and Palestine.

The September 18 actions here, across the country and world mark the continuation of the War Moratorium, to unite individuals and groups who act to end Wars and Massacres, on the Third Friday / weekend of every month.

The local mock teen Cemetery will begin @10am in Santa Barbara, California at Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) on the West Campus lawn across from the campus library overlooking Leadbetter Beach on the Pacific Ocean.

The event is sponsored by the SB Vets for Peace Chapter 54. The event will consist of a mock cemetery of the U.S. Military Teen Dead, from the Iraq & Afghanistan conflicts. To date we have information on 325, 18 & 19 year old casualties from both conflicts.

The “Tombstones” will be set up by volunteers from the SB Vets for Peace Chapter and SBCC Students. Staff, students & visitors passing by on the walkway between the East & West campuses will be asked to come down on the lawn to place a placard of the colored photo & information of a teen casualty on the “Tombstones.” Information about the cost of war and the immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Palestine will be shared.

An SBCC form for students TO BE TAKEN OFF THE MILITARY’S RECRUITMENT LIST, in opposition to the Solomon Amendment will be given out. The Solomon Amendment allows Colleges & Universities to give student names, phone #‘s and other private information to 17 components of the U.S. Military Service each term. Students can prevent the release of their information to the Military Recruiters by using the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), of 1974 to withold the release of their “Directory Information” to the military.

Two Petitions are currently being circulated @ the memorial to be sent to Congress to:
1. Stop the Military Use of Depleted Uranium for VFP, Chapter 116, P.O. Box 96, Albion, CA 95410
2. A Countdown To Withdrawal From Iraq; funding for an Iraqi-led reconstruction of the country; to take care of veterans upon

The article reports pretty much what I experienced at the event. The last paragraph was a bit too short. The Patrick Henry actor recreated the 1775 speech that Henry gave to a group of Virginia’s leaders. It was an impressive presentation that I estimate to be 5 minutes long. The last sentence, which is the summary of the speech, is the Liberty or Death line.

I was a bit stunned to hear a discussion of Hope in the core of the speech. It was as though Henry had taken a Time Machine trip to 2008. At one point, referring to the deteriorating relationship with the Crown, he said “In vain, after these things, may we indulge the fond hope of peace and reconciliation. There is no longer any room for hope.”

Are his words applicable to today? I hope not, but fear that they are.

I would also add that these protests are extremely violent and confrontational in nature. The N word along with very hostile interaction with non-protestors on the scene is becoming commonplace. These gathers have included the birthers, the dead panelers, NRA and various radical groups. The Tea Party Express is paid for by an organization called Americans For Prosperity held by Dick Armey. They receive funding from drug companies, the NRA, insurance companies etc

The rally in DC drew at most 60-75 thousand people, not hundreds of thousands.  It is encouraging to hear, if true, that the party in LA was not an “angry mob”.  It is unfortunate, but understandable, that the bulk of the protest seems to center around policies that actually serve the protesters best interests.  Our most successful social programs, Medicare and Social Security, owe their success to social contracts that seem to be anathema to these protesters (although don’t you dare take them away from them!).  The degree to which these programs suffer can be directly traced to the privatization of Medicare (Medicare Advantage plans and the whole Part D fiasco) and the penchant of congressional conservatives to do whatever they can to destroy social security (can you imagine what would have happened if it had been “privatized” like they wanted during Bush’s presidency?).  I fully support their right to protest and encourage it, and look forward to the day when we can engage in constructive conversations about our shared goals.

Tegrat - You crack me up dude.  You called Social Security and Medicare successful.  One is set to collapse in 2017 and the other in 2040.  According to the GAO between 2030 and 2040 the federal government’s commitment to these entitlement programs will exceed all govt. revenue.  That means no money for anything else.  This is from the Gao not Fox News.  Wake up and smell reality.  This country has 56 trillion dollars in unfunded liabilities.  That’s 430,000 per family.  You’ll have to raise taxes on every man and women in America to fund you “successful programs”.  Is it to much to ask to have a govt. that operates with fiscal responsibility and within the confines of a real budget.  I guess if we can’t pay the Chinese the trillions we owe them then maybe we can give them California as collateral…oh nevermind..Ca is worthless.
