State schools chief Jack O’Connell will not be a candidate for governor next year, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

O’Connell, a Democrat, is barred from seeking a third four-year term as California’s superintendent of public instruction, and his gubernatorial ambitions have been closely watched by political insiders. A $1 million campaign contribution from Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings had fueled speculation that O’Connell would enter the Democratic Party primary against probable candidates Jerry Brown, the state attorney general and former governor, and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.

“After taking a good look at it, the stars just weren’t aligned this time,” O’Connell adviser Rick Miller told the Times, adding that O’Connell, 58, plans to take a break from politics.

O’Connell, a former teacher, spent 20 years representing Santa Barbara County in the Legislature. He served in the state Senate from 1994 to 2002 and in the Assembly from 1982 to 1994. He previously served on the county Board of Education.

Overtaxed taxpayer

GREAT DECISION, Jack!  HE HAS WAY TOO MUCH INTEGRITY TO GET MIRED DOWN IN THE SWAMP WHICH ‘CA POLITIX’ HAS BECOME OVER THE PAST THREE DECADES!  Hell, even rancher & incumbent CA Lt. Gov. John GARAMENDI refuses to run for anything other than a newly vacating U. S. Congressional [“safe Democrat”] seat—which should bring into question his mental health for making such decision in these times!

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO FORCE the Ca Attorney General’s office—- under alleged ‘control’ of former Gov. JERRY BROWN—- to “cease and desist” on all that bloody SPAM I continue to receive daily?  On his web site & in my e-mail received, THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO(!) “un-subscribe” provision, without walking a needless gauntlet on his CA public office web site - inquiring into minute detail [in many cases violating my personal privacy] precisey “WHY” I am cancelling what I thought WAS informaive, but turs out to be merely more tras n y in-box I NEITHER WISH TO RECEIVE NOR TO EVER REQUEST AGAIN, now that J.B.‘s “true ambitions for higher elective office” - for which he is “over-qualiied” - have been revealed for all to see! NO MAS!  WILL IT TAKE A FORMAL COMPALINT FILED WITH THE CA STATE AR ASSOCIATION to obtain “the justice sought - yet repeatedly denied” by a CA state elected legal official?  I AM PREPARED TO DO JUST THAT, if necessary! “FAIR WARNING”!  STRONG MESSAGE FOLLOWS, by snail mail to Sacrameno and “The Sacto Bee” newspaper - which has been following this CA news story assiduously!!!!

This was another good decision from O’Connell. Let Gerry Brown do it because his political future is limited anyway. The California governorhip will be the last office that person holds, at least until we’re out of the deadlocked quagmire and economic debacle we presently find ourselves.
Note to DAVE in UT: Sorry about your email troubles, but why waste our time with them? And please “cease and decist” with all the cap-shouting. It makes you look like a paranoid, loony tea-bagger.
