Randy Quaid, Wife Miss Third Scheduled Court Date

A third court date was scheduled for Thursday for Randy Quaid and his wife, Evi, facing felony charges stemming from leaving a Santa Barbara hotel with an unpaid $10,000 bill, and they failed to appear again.

The couple, accused of skipping out on San Ysidro Ranch, were arrested in Texas in September on Santa Barbara County warrants and were released after each posted $20,000 bail.
They are charged with burglary, defrauding an innkeeper and conspiracy, according to county sheriff’s department spokesman Drew Sugars.
The Quaids have told media that they paid their hotel bill.
After the couple failed to appear in Santa Barbara Superior Court on Thursday, the District Attorney’s Office said it will pursue extradition of the couple from Texas.
Judge Clifford Anderson on Thursday issued a bench warrant — a type of arrest warrant — for the couple.
Quaid, the brother of actor Dennis Quaid, is perhaps best known for his role as Cousin Eddie in the National Lampoon Vacation movies.
San Ysidro Ranch also has made news recently as one of Montecito billionaire Ty Warner’s four hotels under financial scrutiny. A credit watch was issued for the bond backing a $425 million loan on the hotels.

The smaller picture is not of Randy Quaid. Who is it?
[Noozhawk note: It’s Lee Carter of the District Attorney’s Office. Thank you for bringing the error to our attention.]

Reminds me of the “Alabama Skipper Law”. Checked into a motel in Huntsville six years ago, and noticed a sign on the inside of the door - Skipper Law”.
It turns out that the state of Alabama frowns on people who skip out without paying their bill, so they have a law on the books that states if the bill is for $20.00 or less (!), the penalty shall be ONE YEAR IN PRISON. (Chain gang, here I comes!). If the bill is for more than that, the state will be much harsher on the “skipper”.
Feets, do yo’ stuff!

Let’s see. If I were arrested and charged with a crime, would I be given three opportunities to show in court? Don’t think so.

You should have showed up- Clifford Anderson is actually a way cool judge- he is very fair and probably would have not thrown the book at you. 3 times - oops- now he’s going to have to.

why the heck did it take 3 no-shows to issue the bench warrant??? I don’t care who he is or if he is guilty or not, he should have to follow the law and show up when told to. Arrest his butt and maybe then he will show up before the judge.

Ok, I get that they need to pay their bill but how much is Santa Barbara willing to pay to extradite them? Don’t we have better things to spend our money on?
» on 11.02.09 @ 07:35 PM
You can bet that the fine will more than cover the costs. And hopefullly it will act as a deterent for the next person that wants to skip town on his bill.

Someone can always ask “Don’t we have better things to spend our money on?” Bottom line - we have laws and people need to obey them thus, while we can spend our law enforcement $ on something else, a person who avoids taking responsibility for their actions while avoiding the law is exactly what we should be spending our law enforcement $ on so the cops should go get Quaid and bring him back here to stand trial - he shouldn’t be allowed to get away with avoiding the system just because he is famous or just because this is a theft case versus a crime of violence.
