Randy Quaid, Wife Appear in Court, Plead Not Guilty

Actor Randy Quaid and his wife, Evi, appeared in Santa Barbara County Superior Court on Tuesday morning for a scheduled arraignment and pleaded not guilty to charges that they skipped out on a hotel bill.
The Quaids, represented by local criminal attorney Robert Sanger, are accused of using an invalid credit card to pay for a $10,000 stay at Santa Barbara’s San Ysidro Ranch in September.

Evi Quaid carried a credit card into court, saying it was “valid.” She also held a receipt and a fake sheriff’s badge.
The couple have claimed that they settled up with the hotel.
The Quaids were arrested over the weekend in Marfa, Texas, after several no-shows in court, and on Tuesday were released on $20,000 bail each.
They had forfeited that bail last week after failing to appear in court, when Judge Clifford Anderson set new arrest warrants at $40,000 each. Tuesday’s judge was Harry Loberg.
The couple have another court appearance scheduled for March 1.

Liberal elite? Nothing to do with it…(Noozhawk seems hijacked at times) but yes, hang him high.

I appreciate Noozhawk’s goal of reader/responders “elevating” discussion of stories, but how in the world does one elevate something as idiotic as the Quaid’s behavior with a local hostelry? If this story illustrates anything, it’s that being nuts isn’t limited to the less wealthy - or to political perspectives, as SB Native proves in his lunatic posting.

No one seems to be talking about the fact that the Quiads skipped 4 prior mandatory court appearances——if everything with the SY bill was resolved, why did they not bother to appear? And their behavior under such circumstances as being arrested TWICE with revoked bails leads me to question their “playful behavior” of sticking a credit card to her head as Mrs. Quaid walks State St and trading a toy sheriff’s badge back and forth with her husband throughout the proceedings. Like so many other people and events in this day, all I can say is that the Quaids’ sense of decorum, acknowledgment of social responsibility, respect for the law (flawed as that system is) and common sense are all seriously out-of-balance.

Sometime about ten years ago I listed Randy and Evie Quaid’s house on E Mountain Drive for sale. My relationship with them was nothing but straight forward and honest. It would seem that all this publicity does not represent the people I knew. People change but there are other sides to all stories. I wonder whether that side will get the publicity this side did. Someone please explain the use of the fake sheriff’s badge. All the holiday eggnog is still clouding my mind.
