Local company givezooks!, which offers social fundraising for nonprofits and connects organizations and individuals online to increase charitable giving, is holding a contest in which nonprofits and their supporters can win prizes with just the click of a mouse.

The “I give a zook” Donors’ Choice Contest began Tuesday and will run through June 4 at www.givezooks.com/promos/i-give-a-zook.

Supporters can win simply by signing up with givezooks! and voting for their favorite nonprofit. One grand-prize individual winner will receive a givezooks!-branded Flip Mino Video Camcorder. Ten first-prize individual winners will receive a givezooks! T-shirt. The nonprofit with the most votes will win $1,000 in prizes, including $500 toward their cause, three months of givezooks! service and a givezooks!-branded Flip Mino Video Camcorder.

“With the Donors’ Choice Contest, we are providing nonprofits with a powerful new form of online engagement by giving supporters a platform to give a zook!” givezooks! CEO and co-founder Carol Schrader said. “Everyone has a nonprofit that they care about. ... Once you become a zooker, you can vote for your favorite nonprofit and help them while entering yourself in a random drawing to win cool prizes, too!”

Is this just an “infomercial” for the company? A bit of “news” written by the marketing manager? I think we’ve seen this before in the Hawk, i.e., self-promotional articles written by insiders. This may not be unethical if transparent (after all, the writer is identified with company title) but it will make me look more closely at all future Noozhawk articles.

This is not an infomercial—it’s a press release!

Businesses do this all the time, letting the public know what’s new that might be interesting to them. Nonprofits and people who support them would find this interesting and newsworthy.

Printing news releases is a public service, and I’m grateful that Noozhawk is serving the local community this way.

I stand by my original statement. The company Marketing Manager writes copy in the 3rd person, as though reporting an event. Come on kids! Vote for your favorite! Win prizes! Grand prize is a camcorder ... with our company logo! An additional 10 (count ‘em, TEN!) individuals will win an advertising t-shirt ... with our company logo!

Then the Marketing Manager quotes the company CEO & co-founder who exclaims, “win cool prizes, too!”

In the past 30 years, I’ve been a dedicated & regular volunteer for countless non-profits. I’ve been the president of non-profits both here and in San Francisco. I am not unsympathetic to their (our) plight, but this promotion is simply that—a promotion for the company in the guise of doing right by your favorite non-profit.

If you, anonymous poster who sounds suspiciously like a rep from the company or the Hawk, really think this is “interesting and newsworthy,” I am sorry to have roused you. Pardon me.
