Paul Yarbrough: USC’s Carroll Shows Lack of Class Against UCLA
If you’ve been paying close attention during the past six months, you know I don’t much care for USC football coach Pete Carroll. And, to think, I didn’t think my opinion of him could get any lower.

Then comes the final minute of Saturday night’s UCLA-USC game at the Coliseum.
UCLA takes a timeout while hopelessly trailing 21-7, while on defense. That apparently tweaks Carroll, who ordered his quarterback to take a knee on the previous play. You have to understand what goes on around the line of scrimmage when a team takes a knee or appears ready to do so. The officials will inform the defense, so there are no cheap shots. I’m sure that was the case at the Coliseum late Saturday night when Carroll and the Trojans took advantage of the situation to score a few more points while losing so many more on the class-meter.
When they come out of the timeout, Carroll orders a long pass that results in a touchdown and adds to the acrimony between the two schools and head coaches. The officials did a great job of maintaining order, but you know we haven’t heard the last of that. Can you say, “Rivalry renewed”?
When he can exact revenge, you know UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel will do so. And here’s hoping Arizona can post 50 on the Trojans on Saturday. Oregon could have scored 60 against the Trojans on Halloween, but Duck coach Chip Kelly showed some class at the end — something Carroll is sorely lacking.
I am just amazed how Neuheisel is taking as much heat for this timeout as Carroll is for his classless act. I’m sorry, but calling a defensive timeout while trailing late in the game to send a message to YOUR team, is not a case of rubbing it in. Throwing a 50-yard touchdown pass, while leading, after taking a knee, is. Just typical Trojan behavior, however.
It’s kind of funny how the Pac-10 football season unfolded. At the time, we thought Washington’s win over USC in Seattle was a watershed moment. But it didn’t take long to realize that Washington hadn’t improved as much as we thought it had, or that USC had fallen a lot further than anyone dared to suspect.
In addition to losing at Washington, the Trojans laid an egg in Eugene and gave up 50-plus points to Stanford at the Coliseum. The Trojans aren’t in the Rose Bowl hunt and, in fact, look like a great candidate for El Paso’s Sun Bowl.
The Pac-10’s Rose Bowl berth will be determined Thursday night at a sold-out and amped-up Autzen Stadium, where the winner of the Civil War game between Oregon and Oregon State will be headed toward Pasadena on Jan. 1.
I’ve had the good fortune of attending quite a few Rose Bowl games, and it is always special. But I’m not sure I could have pulled it off this year, not at a ticket face value of $145.
I will guarantee, however, that whoever represents the conference against Ohio State on New Year’s Day, Oregon will be well represented.

You are wrong Paul. BOTH coaches are at fault. Yes, Pete Carroll was wrong to call for the pass, he easily could have just run the ball. But Rick Neuheisel was wrong to call a timeout after USC took the knee to try and end the game. I know you don’t like USC and that is fine, but you need to give equal blame. Heck, even UCLA players said after wards that if they were going to call a timeout in that situation they needed to be ready to play, and they were not.
BOTH coaches lacked class because they let their Los Angeles ego’s get in the way. And that is a shame for a city that only has college football.

I agree with James. Carrol was willing to have his team take a knee and a 21-7 victory but Neuheisel refused the offer by taking a timeout. UCLA could have got another offensive play or two so the game wasn’t really over. But the Bruins didn’t play defense and should be hanging their heads. This time Pete Carrol did OK. But his whining after the Stanford game is what showed lack of class.

This was a rivalry game, a Pac-10 game and with a bowl on the line, and I can’t think of any coach who wouldn’t use all three timeouts in that situation. The way UCLA was playing, there’s no way the Bruins could win with 54 seconds left. But the way USC was playing, there was a possibility UCLA could make it 21-14 if they got the ball back. Neuheisel was correct in that situation — although I have plenty of criticism for some of his decisions in the previous 59 minutes.
I don’t fault Petey for throwing that bomb; I was surprised he took a knee on the first play. It’s unfortunate that that was the one play UCLA’s defense wasn’t prepared for all night, because they played their hearts out.
What I’m furious about is the sideline behavior — specifically, Pete Carroll’s — which was one of the worst displays of classless BS that I’ve ever seen. The way he was jumping around, you would have thought he’d won the national championship instead of a close contest between two mediocre teams.

I dunno—Plaschke has a point too: http://www.latimes.com/sports/college/usc/la-sp-plaschke29-2009nov29,0,5628166.column
It seems to me that UCLA would have kept taking the time outs…what other choice did USC have at that point. So, you would have them so sportsmanlike that you’d give the ball away?

“If you’ve been paying close attention during the past six months, you know I don’t much care for USC football coach Pete Carroll. “
Well that pretty much explains the rationale behind the rest of your article.
Pete Carroll did show class by offering to end the game mercifully, something that most teams including Stanford 3 weeks ago wouldn’t do.
Rick called a TO because he wants to keep playing. Okay, fair enough. Not a bad call. But if UCLA is going to play until the end, why shouldn’t USC? The problem here is the UCLA players and Rick weren’t on the same page. A 48 yard throw from Barkley isn’t a typical feat. Had the UCLA defense actually attempted to stop the play, they could have easily done so, and I say this as a Trojan fan.
Besides, Rick himself said that USC was justified in throwing the deep ball. Why whine about it?
But this fuels the great rivlary that is USC-UCLA. All this will do is make UCLA put on their big boy pants and come back next year with more force, giving us all a better game to watch.

Forget it. It was a football game. UCLA called a time out when the chance of their winning was impossible. SC threw a touchdown pass. Was it against the rules for the UCLA secondary to intercept or knock it down?

This ‘article’ just comes across as more smack talk from a UCLA fan.
Ya got beat. Eat it. Live it. Love it. A fair fight has a fair ending, and that’s exactly what happened on Saturday night.

Get over it, Paul. It’s a rivalry game. Somehow I doubt you’d be criticizing Neuheisel if the situation was reversed. This whole argument about unsportsmanlike coaching is a nonstarter. Neuheisel showed leadership by keeping his Bruins in play even when the situation seemed hopeless, and Pete’s sideline celebration was about the symbolism of that long pass completion. The Bruins were already defeated. The pass sent a message to all the jealous naysayers that the Trojans are back in business. The fans needed it after the Stanford debacle. What part of “competition” are you not getting?

SC fans and alums are trying to spread the blame to both coaches. This is totally ridiculous. Stop drinking the Kool-Aid Trojans. Everyone across the country is calling your coach low class. Read the papers outside of the LA (Trojan) Times.
Football coaches don’t have their quarterback throw a bomb when they are trying to run out the clock. They don’t hoot, scream and dance on the sideline when they run up the score. They don’t incite their team to insult the opponents. ONLY Pete Carroll does this.
Until you stop your your sickening adulation of Carroll, you are not going to see how his lying, cheating, and hypocrisy have led your school to the NCAA violations dog house.
Your school is a laughing stock. No one outside of the inbred “Trojan Family” considers it academically superior in any way. Pete Carroll with is low life behavior has only buried you deeper behind Stanford, Cal, and UCLA.
The only question that remains for Trojans is was it worth it. Well Trojans, was it worth winning a few extra games against UCLA and Notre Dame now that Carroll has trashed your school’s reputation?

Coach Rick Neuheisel called a timeout. Lack of respect for the Trojans who were already creaming the Bruins. Coach Carroll decided to make sure his team knew where he stood. Carrol knew that Neuheisel’s timeout call was wrong and he decided to hit back. Knockout.
You think that Carroll was in the wrong? C’mon Paul.

I couldn’t help but respond to the blatant misunderstanding that i think most sportswirters exhibit most of the time. The end of the game was not a matter of class by either coach. Neuheisel had the timeouts and was free to use them. Competitive spirit he is he couldn’t just concede. Carrol could have called the kneel two more times, but there was a risk and indication that there would be know mercy. The pass could hve been incomlete and stopped the clock. He could have run a play and killed more time, but the spirit of football is not just the gentlemanly thing to do and the lines of players jawing at eeach other across the field say we’ll have many more great UCS/UCLA games in the futre with the kind of exitesment that only major rivalries can muster. Rmember what you’re writing about Paul. One of the best rivalries in the country.

“You know I don’t care much for USC Football coach Pete Carroll”, is because you don’t know all of the great things he does outside of football. He is an incredible man who goes into the inner city of Los Angeles to talk and work with gang kids.
However, anyone who does not understand football should not be given a forum to ever write about football and have the general public read his “opinions”. UCLA or any other sports team needs to play until the final whistle. If you don’t want to get humiliated during the game, then play “Defense”. According to this Noozhawk Columnist, UCLA and Rick should have just thrown up the “White Flag”, walked off the field, and gone directly to the bus for the ride back to Westwood. Rick talks about being the other football team in Los Angeles; I think it is still probably Mater Dei High School.
I would love to know your opinion on this question, at what time during the game did the Referee’s tell the UCLA players to stop playing so that they would not get hurt? Third quarter, or maybe it was the middle of the fourth? Give me a break, if the UCLA players could have received two more minutes to play, they would have kept playing. The jury has already come back with the verdict and “Pete Carroll” is the class of the PAC 10!
Stop embarrassing yourself by sharing your “Opinions” with us. Since Pete Carroll has come to USC, how many times has USC been to a “Bowl Game”, how many times has USC gone to a “BCS” bowl game, and how many times has USC played for the National Championship? A little bit of homework might do you some good, but that is just my opinion.

Paul. USC took a knee. UCLA called a timeout. USC kept on playing, UCLA did not. Period. SC all day every day.

“Pete Carroll with is low life behavior has only buried you deeper behind Stanford, Cal, and UCLA. “
I’m guessing you weren’t at the USC - Stanford game this year. If you were, you would have been witness to the Stanford’s band disgusting display of mockery and insults to the USC homecoming crowd during halftime.
Throwing a touchdown pass while your team is up by 2 touchdowns is nothing compared to discussing child molestation and rape over the PA system for all to hear.
Stanford’s band yet again defined “low life behavior,” and Carroll cheering for his team wallows in comparison to Stanford’s bands actions.

Are you a journalist or just some hack? Did you even watch the game. You should do your homework. Neuheisel has said publicly he wanted to force a fumble or force USC to punt. He wanted to try and score again - when the other team had taken a knee already. Your “article” is completely one sided.

ROFL at this paragraph. Worst description of what happened I’ve read from either side of the debate. Did you even watch the game? Quit being such a homer or at least do it with some panache.

Both coaches were well within their right to do what they did.
Neuheisel had 3 timeouts. As a coach you teach players to fight to the bitter end.
USC is well within their right to call “game-on”.
However, what makes this noteworthy is that Carroll rolled the dice in dialing up a bomb, instead of an easier 1st down on a hitch, curl, screen…heck even a run. It was a symbolic, not a tactical decision.
The reaction from the USC sideline and Carroll himself tells the rest of the story.
There’s no surprise though. The age of class, sportsmanship, and mutual respect have long gone.

Now you know why Jim Harbaugh (with a 4 touchdown lead and 6 minutes left) went for 2 against SC two weeks ago.
Pete Carroll loves to rub it in and preen a lot, and he’s had the talent to get away with the overbearing arrogance for years. Look, all SC had to do was let UCLA take their time outs and kneel each time - big deal.
Somehow SC was disrespected here? The only way you could actually disrespect SC would be if you cut Matt Barkley’s salary from say $75,000 to $25,000.

Paul Yarbrough has just never given up being a Bruin fan and thats OK. It was Rick Neuheisel was the coach who called time out as the Trojans were trying to run the clock out. Crazy things can happen in football. I’ll always regrettably remember Gary Bebans two late TD throws after SC had pushed them all over the field. Coach Rick bears the fault here! He embarassed UCLA after they fought hard but were clearly outclassed by SC talent. The monpoly in LA is not over Rick and Bruin fans should give Pete Carroll his proper due as a great coach and he will bring the Trojans back to greater prominence. Fight on!!!

Come on. When you are in lead and want to kill clock you run the ball. None of this what if USC fumbled. Run the ball or take a knee to get clock down low. And if you are down, you call timeouts.. 2 TDs is not much even if UCLA Offense dropped passes all night.
Since when is it wrong to call timeouts?? People stop learning your football from Madden and E$PN, i mean Disney Channel..

—“Come on. When you are in lead and want to kill clock you run the ball. None of this what if USC fumbled. Run the ball or take a knee to get clock down low.”—
Ok. USC take a knee, UCLA calls a time out with what, 51 secs. remaining? Timeout number one. USC runs a play or takes another knee on 2nd down. UCLA calls timeout number two with 45 secs on clock. 3rd down now. USC runs another play or takes another knee. UCLA calls timeout with 40 secs. on the clock. 4th down. Does USC punt? take another knee so they dont get the punt blocked?
Lets say they punt and UCLA gets ball back on their own 20 with about 35-30 secs left. Stranger things have happened in sports (Stanford - Cal, Pacers - Knicks) where teams have come back in those situations, no matter how small, little, or no chance they have.
—“And if you are down, you call timeouts.. 2 TDs is not much even if UCLA Offense dropped passes all night.”“—-
So by that thinking, USC should have tried to score because as you said, 2 touchdowns isn’t much. If it isnt that much, USC needed to score to ensure the win.

This has to be one of the absolute worst articles I’ve read on this website or any other for a long time. Seriously…...The author openly admits his hatred for the USC coach but then expects the reader to consider the rest of the opinion to be neutral because he is going to educate us as to what happens in a huddle?
Then he asks us to make a tremendous leap of logic. So because they took a knee on the play before and the refs may or may not have told the defense they were going to, you somehow think the refs told the UCLA players on the next play that USC intended to take a knee again??? When they were in a spread offense configuration??? Thus, the tremendous leap that USC “took advantage” of UCLA???
Finally, it seems somewhat ironic that the author is mocking the Sun Bowl as a destination for USC when it appears that UCLA will likely not be invited to a bowl game. UCLA would be ecstatic to be in the Sun Bowl.

Paul, I think you rushed this column a bit. You don’t really back anything up. You just put it out there that you don’t like USC, recap the events poorly and then call it “typical Trojan behavior” before jumping to the PAC-10 as a whole. If you’re gonna be so passionately opposed to Carroll’s decision, don’t lead with it and give up after 200 words. Focus a little bit here.
What “message” was Neuheisel sending to his defense by calling the timeout? That is something you fail to explain. The boos came from the crowd immediately after he called that timeout, and for good reason.
It made no sense.
It served no purpose but to say “I’m not ready to stop playing yet, even if we’re gonna lose.”
Pete, who was initially trying to run the clock out and get to the postgame handshake, said to himself “Fine, we’ll keep playing.”
And Chicago Jim, way to call USC a laughingstock and academically inferior with no basis. Where do your judgements on the school’s academic programs come from? Is it the lack of quality professors? That would be a tough one for you to argue. Is it low admissions standards? Don’t think so. So what is it?
