Many Residents Left Out of Capps’ Health-Care Forum
Hundreds of people showed up Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Santa Barbara for a health-care information session hosted by Rep. Lois Capps, D-Santa Barbara — and they didn’t get in.
Click here for the health-care forum story.
Those who arrived much later than 4:30 or 5 p.m. for the 6 o’clock forum had no chance of getting a seat in the 210-capacity church. People were turned away shortly after 5:30 p.m. and were angry. By the time people were let in to the church on the corner of Anapamu and Garden streets, the line stretched to Laguna Street, a block away, and continued around the corner.
Many in the line confronted Capps’ staff, who said they were out of tickets but added that the session would be available later on Capps’ Web site. The “unhappy people in line” — some of whom signed a piece of paper titled just that — stuck around afterward, talking in groups about their frustration with the venue choice.
Many people said they were suspicious of the motives behind the venue.
“How many people did she think would show up?” asked Mark Sanford, who works only a few doors down from the church.
The choice of a church irked him. “She knows damn well that God-fearing people won’t raise their voices,” he said.
For many, there wasn’t time to get off work, find parking and make it into the line before the cutoff — which turned out to be before 5 p.m.
Some people were from out of the area — one couple drove in from Santa Ynez — and couldn’t make it in time.
While there were people who expressed suspicion about the attendance being “stacked” so Capps had more supporters, there were people on both sides stuck outside when the session began.
All three of Capps’ forums this week will be held in churches with a capacity of 250 or fewer. Although the Santa Barbara church’s sanctuary can accommodate up to 500 people, according to the church’s wedding brochure, some of those in line said the session was held in the social hall, which is smaller.
Andrea Hoffman, an intern with Capps’ office, said the line was based on the honor system and that signs were not allowed inside the church. There was a sign check-in area, but many people got around the rule by wearing shirts with slogans printed or drawn on them.
Many of those left outside said they wanted to encourage Capps to hold an information session in one of Santa Barbara’s larger venues, such as SBCC.
The first person in line was E.J. Borah. The six-year Santa Barbara resident staked out her place in line at 2 p.m., and she said it was at least an hour before many more joined her. “I’m a real supporter of Lois,” she said.
There were several public officials and candidates in line, including Santa Barbara Mayor Marty Blum, 2nd District Supervisor Janet Wolf and Assembly candidate Susan Jordan.

Ummm last I checked, Santa Ynez is not in Lois’ district…these out-of-towners should try complaining to their Congressman Elton Gallegly—even though he ignores his constituents, that’s their problem and not Lois’.

Your title says it exactly how it was. Glad you are not tossing around the same spin Capps is trying to toss around. This was such sham of a “town hall”. Of course the real action was on the outside amongst those shut out - KEY news of course with the rest of her paid supporters and reserved seats INSIDE with a sign on the door saying “no signs allowed inside” the news cameras might pick up the true tone of the opposition that way. This is a representative democracy? This thing was completely controlled.

They should have checked driver’s licenses at the door and anyone outside her district should not be allowed to come in. It is very easy to check zip codes. The purpose of the meeting is to have an exchange between our Congress Woman and the people that she represents. If they did get in the door and ask a question then they should be required to say where they live or leave. United Healthcare and American’s for Progress are busing paid operatives to townmeetings across the country. They are provided talking points with the goal of disrupting and scaring everyone attending.

While leaving the hot crowded “pep talk” (nee forum) held tonight, I asked a senior what he thought. “A highly controlled situation,” he said. I couldn’t agree more. First, we have a PUNY venue, then we have the highly biased League of Women Voters vetting questions (sounds like what the White House press corps endures) etc. What a sham. SEVERAL I know were physicians present, and NONE of their questions taken (though pro-public option Dr. Kahn got his question taken. Is that a surprise??) On the way home, Dr. Drew Pinsky, sitting in for Dennis Miller summed up what physicians I know say: If we adopt this reform bill we’re throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
Why is it Lois-the-meek, that you won’t take questions from physicians??? Those who know where the rubber meets the road. WE KNOW WHY. And we need new representation!!!
Read the bill. It will fry your hair. One of the fastest downloads to bill I’ve found is in this article:

Controlled by the congressperson’s staff. It’s not like it really matters as Capps does whatever the powers that be tell her to.
I can’t figure out why Capps could not have scheduled so that people that work, pay taxes, and are most concerned about this sham could get in line too wink..wink.

LOL! All this whining about not getting in! This thing has been advertised for over a week and to my recollection the size of the venue was included in every story. WHAT WERE YOU EXPECTING!?!?! Did you think a magical fairy would show up and sprinkle extra seat dust on the church? Or maybe you are just looking for any reason to complain that you can find.

sbnative, please understand all the ‘death committees’ stuff is hyperbolic bunk. Your doctor should follow your wishes for end-of-life care, of which some scenario is destined for every one of us. Your comments in the past have been generally cogent, but don’t believe the baited talking points (referenced in your url). Such a discussion of wishes is really important for us all, and has nothing to do with economics, but all to do with your doctor following your wishes. People who frame their argument about health care with ‘death committee’ are not looking at the true aim of the legislation. For more info, look up ‘POLST’ (physician’s order for life sustaining treatment), or ask your physician (and definitely *fill one out*, remember Terry Schiavo?). This is endorsed by the California Medical Association and a number of representative physician’s groups. Ultimately, these discussions are aimed at following a patient’s wishes to celebrate one’s own life and dignity, and not merely to extend death, which certainly can be done but may not be in accord with ones own wishes. More info: http://www.ohsu.edu/polst/patients-families/faqs.htm
As for ‘death committees’, my own experience as a physician has seen more insurance companies, and our insurance system, act as death committees than anything you might imagine. I’m not saying the answers are simple, but we need to discuss rather than scream.

QUESTION for CAPPS (since I didn’t get to ask it tonight in the “forum”) – You said repeatedly we can keep our private insurance. I ask you IN A HOUSE OF GOD how can you LIE? How can you foist this flawed bill on your constituents, when you (and your Congressional colleagues) will be exempt from it??? (Oh, your plan may meet minimum standards as defined by HR 3200, but don’t pretend it won’t vastly exceed it! Think Teddy Kennedy’s surgeries, for starters…)
You said: We can keep our own insurance. That is a LIE and FALSE.
Under HR 3200:
Page 16: Companies cannot offer their workers a new private insurance plan if that plan was established after the first day of Obamacare. The only option will be the government public option… Also on Page 16: After the first day of Obamacare, companies will be banned from offering any changes to the private insurance policies they offer their workers.
Page 149: Businesses with a payroll of over $400,000, who don’t provide the public option plan, will pay 8% tax on all payroll.
Page 150: Businesses with payroll between $251,000 and $400,000, who don’t provide the public option plan, shall pay 2-6% tax on all payroll.
Page 167: Individuals who don’t have “acceptable care”—as defined by the government—will be taxed on 2.5% of their income.
Page 21-22: The bill MANDATES government AUDITS of employers’ books that choose to self-insure their workers… (with private insurance options.)
HOW LONG IS IT GOING TO TAKE before employers can’t GET private insurance (even if they had it before Y1) because private insurers go out of business?
Does Congress have a TIMETABLE in mind?
And when the public option is the ONLY option, we’re to believe that with NO competition our government is gonna take care of us? Like the Post Office does (thank God for UPS and Fed-Ex…)
This forum was a joke. START READING and LEARNING PEOPLE, because your “representative” is a Obama/Pelosi shill…

To “anon MD” - no argument people should have these discussions… not STRANGERS with the power to decide for them… since you interpret it one way and yet it can be interpreted another, isn’t it time for a bill that we can ALL understand??? This bill is not it! That is the point!!! WHY THE RUSH???? (Oh, that’s right. Poltical expediency, I forgot.)

Do you think they should check drivers licenses when they provide healthcare to? Because that is not required, in fact forbidden in HR3200 in order to give health care access to anyone that walks across the border.

The price will be paid at the ballot box. It is obvious Capps doesn’t care what YOU think. The tamest town halls have been the controlled ones of both Obama and Capps with pre-screened audience and questions. The real action was outside on the front steps. But the press was lured inside - kind of like ABC news at the whitehouse. Fascist socialism and propaganda is alive and well.

Yeah! There is a very valid point that the Noozhawk is giving a pass to Congressman Elton for not holding any type of forum. Noozhawk, does have a reputation for having a right wing slant. I do enjoy Noozhawk for news but it won’t take much for me to get information elsewhere.

Congresswoman Capp’s level of availability to the public is unacceptable. We hire these people to go to Washington to represent us and then they come back to Santa Barbara for a few days and act like the opportunity for us to meet with them is a high privilege limited to a very few. Those left on the outside didn’t miss much. Apparently Congresswoman Capps thinks that it is more important for her to tell us what to think than to actually listen to what her constituents have to say. Last week the Vandeventer Group hosted a real town hall where people could actually ask questions, voice their opinion, and state their beliefs with their own voice and passion. Congresswoman Capps ought to be willing to have that same give and take with the people who pay her to represent us.

I think there was a complete lack of respect for her constituents. Contrary to SBres statement this was announced on Monday. Most people have jobs, families, responsibilities. Two days notice for an event that is going to take up your whole evening takes planning for most of us. Maybe SBres was on a special list that was informed before hand. Besides…who holds an event with two days notice? Someone who hopes that most people won’t come. That also explains the tiny venue.

Capps’ comment to KEYT (after the forum—aka informercial) about the “length” of event said it all: “I’m not sure there’s much more information that could have been given.” Uh, Lois, what about our un-asked and un-answered questions??? (Oh, you had some vetted questions (a giveway was the “hi” to “Cinder”) but you made sure no information that “damaged” your case got brought up. THIS IS democracy??? This was Pablum in the heat…
Agree with Vandeventer, Capps showed a COMPLETE lack of respect for her constituents and it stinks. Just like this “bill.” START OVER and THROW THE BUMS OUT.

Please all you conservatives, libertarians, Republicans or whatever you are. The country is progressive, has been progressive for a long time and we’re moving ahead. You had your two unelected terms with Bush and Cheney and they were the best you could do. Which, obviously was not good enough. Now go to bed, you have a full day of Fox News to look forward to tomorrow.

“Fascist socialism and propaganda is alive and well”
HAHAHA I hate to dignify your dumb-dumb comments, but you did make an unintentional funny! Seeing that fascism is the promotion of private enterprise, unregulated capitalism and corporate ideology and socialism is the exact opposite….how can Lois and Obama be both? Did you get those talking points from Sean Hannity? I didn’t even need Wikipedia to prove your comments are bunk, it’s kind of like common knowledge. I cannot believe dumb-dumbs like you are trying to control the health care debate. You fail.

Does Lois get her daily instructons from the democratic leaders by phone or email. I would say email because if verbal she would probably forget them. It must have been her leaders who set this meeting up to insure that she would do exactly as they instruct her. Does she ever express a thought of her own in private or is she a twenty four seven channel of Speaker Pelosi?

Have we redefined fascism? because my dictionary says:
Fascism:
a governmental system led by a dictator having complete power, forcibly suppressing opposition and criticism, regimenting all industry, commerce, etc., and emphasizing an aggressive nationalism and often racism.

I gotta say, sbnative you are becoming my hero. Keep up the good work! The progressives (only 20% of the voting public) think this is a progressive country. Only in their warped doublespeak mind. 60% of the voting population consider themselves to be conservative and the percentage goes up when it comes to economic matters. Why? We’re Americans, not Europeans. We don’t want a cradle to grave nanny state, thank you very much and we would rather work for our own benefit not some leaches. Good grief, even the downtrodden illegal immigrants flooding in here to get your progressive freebies understand the value of working for a living why can’t you libs?
There is not a sole in America that doesn’t see problems with healthcare costs and delivery. But ushering in the worst financial management system in the history of the universe, our government, to fix these problems is like throwing gasoline on a fire. The government WILL make it worse. Don, you can rant all you want, but for God’s sake man just look at the Feds track record will you? Forget all the partisan hyperbole and look at what they have DONE. Neither party is blameless. The reason the GOP is out of power is NOT because the country is liberal or progressive or moving that way. The GOP lost because they spent money like a DEMOCRAT and their conservative based punished them by staying away from the poles. When republican leaders do conservatism, they win. When they try to be like democrats they lose.
There is no doubt our country’s economy and thus the wealth it generates that provides the services we want (like healthcare) has been trashed by selfish, greedy criminals and scumbags. But the existence of these pariahs does not mean capitalism or conservatism is bad. And you cannot control these people by becoming a totalitarian socialist state. That only ensures that the greedy become public figures rather than private. Again, look at history. There is no need to repeat past errors. Deal with the greedy by flushing them out of their private ensconced homes and trot them down main street for all to scorn them. Greed must be dealt with at the personal and social level, never by government, who is just as susceptible to it. If you are a stock holder, and that means anyone who has a 401k or other pooled investment plan, you have a moral and fiduciary responsibility to hold the companies you are owners of, accountable. If you abdicate that responsibility to government you get the mess we have today. Socialism, for all practical purposes is nothing more than abdication of individual responsibility to the state. Our tipping in that direction over the last 4 decades has not produced a more responsible society, but less of one. And that my liberal and progressive friends is why Obamacare is getting the blow back it is today.
