Montecito Union School Principal in Limbo
Montecito Union School Principal Kris Bergstrom has been released from her position as principal after a unanimous vote from the district’s school board during closed session Thursday night.
Bergstrom couldn’t be reached for comment Friday, but Noozhawk received a statement from board president Carissa Smith about the decision.
Smith said the move to release Bergstrom was to “give the district maximum flexibility as it moves forward with a possible new administrative structure.”
She was unclear exactly why Bergstrom was released, but said the decision had to be made to comply with the state requirement to give Bergstrom notice by March 15.
A statement also was issued to parents and staff throughout the Montecito Union District on Friday, stating that the decision does not constitute a layoff.
“Ms. Bergstrom retains her tenure as a teacher in the district, and she can have a classroom teaching assignment in the fall if she chooses. Ms. Bergstrom is also welcome to apply for any of the administrative positions that may be available,” the statement read. “The board will be moving forward with discussions in the community regarding the district’s organizational structure.”
Earlier in the day, Noozhawk put in a call to Montecito Union District Superintendent Richard Douglas to ask whether Bergstrom had been fired.
He adamantly denied that she’d been fired, and said the district is in the middle of a search for a superintendent as well as an organizational review.
Douglas said that as of his retirement announcement, which he made last fall, the district has hired a search firm to look for a new superintendent, and it hired School Services of California to conduct an organizational review of the district.
“That review was presented to the school board on Monday of this week, and they offered a number of suggestions for organization. They need to be able to consider those changes. As a result, they needed to notice the principal as far as what would her duties be, how would they change, etc.,” said Douglas, adding that the review is a detailed “position by position review” of the school district.
Smith said the district has received recommendations from its consultants about reorganization, but it hasn’t yet adopted any recommendations.

Montecito Union School is a gem in our community. This parent gives the outside Consulting Firm an F and Principal Kris Bergstrom an A. Give me a break!

Somebody please reassure me that this is a formality for the reorganization and not anything negative about Kris. We need to know if the board is questioning her leadership. The secrecy is causing unnecessary anxiety for the community.

I have never seen an educator and administrator more in touch with her students and parents. The community and school will never have anyone so talented in this
capacity again. What a great loss to the montecito community.
I believe we need details immediately.
Ms B., Thank you for all you have done for our children, families and community.

Personally, I think a statue should be built in honor of Kris Bergstrom and she should be reinstated with an apology and handed both the principal and superintendent jobs.
Here’s the board’s response:
Overview of Where We’ve Been, Where we Are, and Where we are Going: A Simple Fact Sheet
Fact: There is a great deal of anger, hurt and confusion in the MUS community right now. There is also significant support for Ms. Bergstrom among the MUS community.
Fact: The decision made by the Board last Thursday was not rash and did not come out of the blue. This process started last summer, with the completion and approval of the MUS Strategic Plan and the announcement of retirement of Dick Douglas as Superintendent.
Fact: The Board was asked, last fall, to examine the organizational structure of the school to make sure it supports the strategic goal of “Global Education Excellence.” The Board hired the expertise of School Services of California in November to conduct this organizational review with input from a large number of teachers, parents and community members.
Fact: The Board committed to an open, transparent, collaborative process. There were regular updates, the creation of various tools such as a project timeline to help everyone understand the process and their opportunities for input, and the institution of new Monday morning town hall meetings for the express purpose of sharing thoughts and ideas.
Fact: School Services sought many forms and types of feedback.: face to face interviews with the majority of our teachers, interviews with staff, parents, board members and community members, a community forum/town hall at MUS open to all, a written survey, the opportunity for anyone to contact School Services via email or phone, online research, research of other schools and “best practices” and School Services own experience and expertise. Their regular updates were also made available to all via the MUS website.
Fact: On March 8th, School Services presented their findings and conclusions to the Board and the public.
Fact: Ms. Bergstrom has not been fired. California’s Education Code requires that if a district is considering, for any reason, not having a certificated school administrator back in the same position for the subsequent school year, the district has to notice that person by March 15th.
Fact: If the Board had not voted to release Ms. Bergstrom in accordance with this requirement, the Board could not have given the recommendations from the organization study any consideration. Ms. Bergstrom is welcome to interview/apply for any administrative positions that come out of this process.
Fact: The work of the Board is not done. We must continue on our path to hire a new superintendent. We also must decide what we would like to do with the recommendations on the organization structure. We need to decide what role we would like our new Superintendent to play in those decisions.

I have been a MUS parent for a long time. I have and will continue to volunteer at my children classroom and have a very good rapport with teachers. I might not attend board meetings or agree with all the board’s decision but I do inform myself. I read all the reports (board minutes, surveys, consultant’s findings and etc). For some of you parents to come to the meeting and start lashing out at the elected board of trustees is not very professional.
I am not here to take sides. That is not my job. My job is to inform myself and ask questions. However, after going to the board meeting last night. I felt compelled to write this.
Parents of Montecito Union: you had the opportunity to participate in the survey and many of you did not! The superintendent emailed all parents many times REMINDING YOU! YOU DID NOT! Many of you did not even read the report before coming to the meeting last night.
Some parents stated that we should not pay for the consultant. they have already done their work and we moved on.
Some parents stated that we should re-do the survey. You had the opportunity and you did not. Would you allow your child to take the test over again? b/c they were not prepared the first time.
Some parents stated that Globalization means paying for teachers’ travel to San Gabriel, Mexico. Why don’t you take your children outside of Montecito to learn the rich culture in your own back yard.
Globalization in this report means: Increasing level of education in math, science, literature, history compare to other countries around the world. It does not mean donation money for teachers to go to a country and coming back to teach your kids about culture. You as a parent should teach your child that. Montecito parents think if they throw money at school, everything will be fixed. Read the report.
Did you look at the report? Did you notice that most of the teachers did not come last night? Did you know about March 15 deadline? Did you know Ms Bergstrom was not fired? Did you know you had the opportunity to participate and you did not? Did you know only 200 signed the petition out of 800? That only represents 25% of the school population. Did you know board is in the process of interviewing 5 or more candidates for superintendent? Did you know majority of teachers participated in the survey? Did you know teachers have to work on a daily basis with administrators not you as a parent? Parents come and go!!! Teachers stay forever!!!
Please keep your facts straight before making dragatory remarks.
Again, I am not taking sides, I am looking at facts.
Some parents believe there was secrecy on part of board members but you had many opportunity to participate at all the board meetings and public meetings and you chose not to.

Good post Informed.
My only comment is its not about the teachers or the parents, its about the kids. From what I can tell from 7 years of experience at MUS, Ms. B connected with them better than any school administrator I’ve ever witnessed.
I get why the board did what they did, procedurally, but its demoralizing to a hardworking, highly committed woman that has dedicated her life to our children and the results are evident. She should be commended, not offended.

This is amazing to me! We have been actively involved with Kris Bergstrom for many years both professionally and personally, and she is the most amazing and powerful woman that any school would be blessed with to have her as their leader.
This definately is a political issue having to do with her sexual orientation, and is being used as a coverup using the budget issues and admin changes as the perfect “alibi”. I sure hope she seeks legal advice AGAINST the district, as this was absolutely wrongful dismissal.
Montecito will surely suffer losing her as a part of the school, district and community!
I wish her the best of luck!!!

I have known Kris Bergstrom for 5 years. She is an exceptional Principal, a sensitive leader, honest and ethical as the day is long, and works tirelessly on behalf of students, teachers, and parents. The overwhelming majority of parents at MUS are in complete support of Ms. Bergstrom. I have served on 5 committees with her including the year-long Strategic Planning Committee, Special Education Inclusion Committee, PTA, etc. She is an excellent communicator, an effective decision-maker, she motivates students and teachers, and is an inspiration to all. Additionally, I have edited the school newsletter every 2 weeks for 4 years. I interact with a broad spectrum of teachers, parents, and MUS staff. There is over-the-top respect for Kris, appreciation for all she has brought to the school, and a personal connection with families that I have never witnessed before.
The fact that the MUS Board has released her pending hiring a new Superintendent is a story of its own: the Board has made a flat-out horrible decision, communicated it in a style that can only be called “botched”, and has alienated the entire parent body. The real motives behind their decisions may never be known. Being forthright has never been the Board’s strong point. They are clearly out of sync and out of touch with the overwhelming parent majority. At a recent Board meeting, the President had to extend the public speaking time by a factor of 3 to allow the auditorium of parents speak in support of Kris Bergstrom. She’s one of the very best things about our great school. The Board has done irreparable harm to Ms. Bergstrom’s reputation and to the community. Not once has the Board taken responsibility for initiating the parent backlash, not once have they spoken a word acknowledging Kris’s invaluable contributions to the school. The Board has shown its colors. Kris has always shown hers - golden.
