A 22° sun halo appeared over Goleta on Sunday afternoon. Sun halos generally indicate rain is on the way but, this time, the National Weather Service forecasts fog and a heavy marine layer through Wednesday. The familiar 22° halo around the sun or moon is caused by the refraction in tiny hexagonal ice crystals in the air and should not be confused with sundogs, or parahelions. Extreme caution must be taken when photographing the sun directly. Use the proper solar filters for viewing.
