There’s no looking back at Cabrillo.

Coach AJ Pateras has his troops focused on the present.

And the Conquistadores have some exciting skill players and tough guys on defense to get the job done and bring home some victories after a winless 2018.

“A fun group of kids who like to work,” Pateras said of the team. “There’s a nastiness about them that brings a mental edge to the competition. An explosive group that is fun to be around.”

Zack Ramos, the JV starter last season, will be the varsity starter at quarterback.

“Zack brings the unexpected at quarterback. He can make all the throws, and he hangs in there to find his guy,” Pateras said.

One player he’ll be utilizing is the athletic Mykul Guillory.

“Mykul Guillory will play everywhere on offense and will solidify our secondary,” Pateras said.

Guillory, Trey Robison and Patrick Durham ran well in a scrimmage last Friday.

“I thought we had some bright spots. Trey Robison and Mykul Guillory running the ball, and Patrick Durham showed that he will be a force on either side of the ball,” Pateras said. “We came out healthy, which is the ultimate goal, but we still have some work to do.”

Juniors Tony Boneck and James Mayfield are sure-handed and quick wide receivers, and sophomore Julian Carlson is a speedy and physical tight end.

Senior linebacker JJ Lombrano is the leader on defense. Junior Cade McNamee returns at defensive end. He played in every game as a sophomore.

With so many returning starters, the Conquistadores are excited about turning things around.
