ADMHS to Provide Crisis Intervention Training to County’s First Responders

The program will focus on dealing effectively with people with severe mental illnesses

On June 4-6, the Santa Barbara County Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Services will offer a Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) for about 40 law enforcement professionals and other first responders from agencies throughout the county.

Established in Memphis in 1987, CIT programs educate and prepare law enforcement professionals deal effectively with people with severe mental illnesses.

CIT has been credited with preventing officer injuries, reducing recidivism by mental health consumers, strengthening relationships between law enforcement and mental health care providers and lessening the demand on emergency medical and psychiatric services.

The three-day program will educate police officers and other first responders in a variety of topics, including mental health disorders, medications, crisis negotiation, dual diagnosis and substance abuse, safety, suicide prevention, and consumer and family perspectives.

Dr. Joel Fay, a psychologist and retired police officer who served with the San Rafael Police Department from 1975 to 2001, will also share his unique perspective on a number of critical issues.

“We appreciate the strong support of law enforcement agencies throughout Santa Barbara County in working with us to ensure compassionate treatment of individuals with mental illness,” ADMHS Director Ann Detrick said.

Noozhawk Asks: What’s Your Question?

Welcome to Noozhawk Asks, a new feature in which you ask the questions, you help decide what Noozhawk investigates, and you work with us to find the answers.

Here’s how it works: You share your questions with us in the nearby box. In some cases, we may work with you to find the answers. In others, we may ask you to vote on your top choices to help us narrow the scope. And we’ll be regularly asking you for your feedback on a specific issue or topic.

We also expect to work together with the reader who asked the winning questions to find the answer together. Noozhawk’s objective is to come at questions from a place of curiosity and openness, and we believe a transparent collaboration is the key to achieve it.

The results of our investigation will be published here in this Noozhawk Asks section. Once or twice a month, we plan to do a review of what was asked and answered.

Thanks for asking!
