Chinese Athletes Have Fun at Carpinteria All-Comers Meet

A group of eight young athletes from China competed in the 500 meters at the most recent Carpinteria All-Comers Track & Field Meet at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium.

The 20-something group is training with Ventura College coach Tony Veney for about a month, according to Carpinteria coach Van Latham. He said the women have given themselves funny names. "They said you can call me Hello Kitty or Rabbit."

They took the top four spots in the 500. Skinny, Skinny won in 1:09.70 followed by Hello Kitty, Rabbit, Rabbit and Monkey, Monkey.

Latham said the group plans to return to the final meet of the summer on Aug. 5.

In other action, Carpinteria's Daniel Burquez won the long and triple jumps, setting a PR in the triple with a mark of 41-00 1/2.

Santa Barbara thrower Devon Cetti won the shot put and San Marcos grad Matt Turk took the pole vault.

Noozhawk Asks: What’s Your Question?

Welcome to Noozhawk Asks, a new feature in which you ask the questions, you help decide what Noozhawk investigates, and you work with us to find the answers.

Here’s how it works: You share your questions with us in the nearby box. In some cases, we may work with you to find the answers. In others, we may ask you to vote on your top choices to help us narrow the scope. And we’ll be regularly asking you for your feedback on a specific issue or topic.

We also expect to work together with the reader who asked the winning questions to find the answer together. Noozhawk’s objective is to come at questions from a place of curiosity and openness, and we believe a transparent collaboration is the key to achieve it.

The results of our investigation will be published here in this Noozhawk Asks section. Once or twice a month, we plan to do a review of what was asked and answered.

Thanks for asking!
