North County Symposium Draws Picture of Arts Economics

The Santa Barbara County Office of Arts and Culture will present a North County version of its annual arts symposium from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Edwards Community Center, 809 Panther Dr. in Santa Maria.

The symposium, sponsored by the Santa Barbara County Arts Commission and Santa Maria Department of Recreation and Parks, will closely examine the economic conditions for local arts organizations and cultural practitioners. Moreover, the symposium will present immediate opportunities for funding for artists and organizations across disciplines.

There will be a presentation featuring significant support opportunities from the California Arts Council and Center for Cultural Innovation.

The symposium will also feature hands-on workshops regarding fiscal sponsorship, grant narratives and best-practices case studies conducted by representatives from the Santa Barbara County Office of Arts & Culture. The content will be especially relevant for artists, cultural practitioners and arts organizations.

This event is free and open to the public, with a suggested donation of $5 for morning breakfast. Participants are responsible for bringing their own lunches.

Noozhawk Asks: What’s Your Question?

Welcome to Noozhawk Asks, a new feature in which you ask the questions, you help decide what Noozhawk investigates, and you work with us to find the answers.

Here’s how it works: You share your questions with us in the nearby box. In some cases, we may work with you to find the answers. In others, we may ask you to vote on your top choices to help us narrow the scope. And we’ll be regularly asking you for your feedback on a specific issue or topic.

We also expect to work together with the reader who asked the winning questions to find the answer together. Noozhawk’s objective is to come at questions from a place of curiosity and openness, and we believe a transparent collaboration is the key to achieve it.

The results of our investigation will be published here in this Noozhawk Asks section. Once or twice a month, we plan to do a review of what was asked and answered.

Thanks for asking!
