Authorities have released the name of the man who died Sunday after falling overboard from a catamaran near Point Conception.

The victim was Jean-Denis Muys, 58, of Menlo Park, according to Raquel Zick, a spokeswoman for the Santa Barbara County sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau.

Emergency personnel were dispatched shortly before 3 p.m. Sunday to the area between Jalama Beach County Park and Point Conception, county fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli said at the time.

He said Muys had fallen off a 27-foot boat, which ran aground near Point Conception.

The search for the man involved county water-rescue teams and a helicopter, along with personnel from Vandenberg Air Force Base and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter.

The Coast Guard located the man, Bertucelli said, but he was dead.

The man’s companion was rescued from the vessel and transported to shore for medical treatment, Bertucelli said.

The companion’s name not released.

According to the LinkedIn website, Muys was a senior software engineering manager for Facebook.

Officials initially said that the victim was 67 years old.
