Ava Cole did well in her debut as the setter for the San Marcos girls volleyball team in a season-opening sweep at Buena on Tuesday, 25-22, 25-21, 25-21.

Cole, a sophomore, has stepped into the setter’s position for the injured Ellie Gamberdella.

“Ava Cole set a very smart offense in her varsity debut,” said co-coach Dwayne Hauschild.

She got all her hitters involved. Taylor Wilson led the attack with 11 kills, Madison Oriskovich had eight kills and middle Brynn Sofro added six kills.

Senior libero Grace Matthews paced the defense with a team-high 13 kills.

The Royals are home on Thursday against Arroyo Grande.
