Avery Ball scored the tying goal in the last minute of regulation time and delivered the game-winner with 16 seconds to go in the second sudden-victory overtime period to give Dos Pueblos a 6-5 Channel League-opening win at Cate in rematch of last year’s girls lacrosse Division 2 championship.
The game winner came after DP’s Annette Bennett saved a Cate free shot. The Chargers raced down field and Ball took a shot that was stopped by Cate’s goalie Liz Sutter.
An alert Katie Naretto of DP ran in and intercepted a clearing pass and sent a quick pass back to Ball, who quick-sticked it into the back of the net.
“My girls played their hearts out the second half and in both overtimes,” said DP coach Samantha Limkeman, whose team trailed 3-2 at halftime. “I know had we played the whole game with the same passion and fire of the second half, it would have been a different game. It was a whole team effort for us and it required skill from all our players. That’s what makes this win so sweet — it was not one player, it was a full team coordination.”
Ball scored three goals, Olivia Geyling had two and Brooke Essig added one. Naretto had three assists and Bennett made 10 saves.
“We knew this would be a close game, but it was fun to go out with a win after losing in the championship game last season to Cate,” Limkeman said.
Lily Riehl scored four goals and Mia Foster had one for Cate, and goalie Liz Sutter made nine saves.
Cate coach Renee Mack praised Lilly Zanze, Maya Fenelon, Taylor Kane and Riley Borchard playing disciplined and aggressive on the ball, accounting for nine turnovers in the first half.
On offense, “Lily was the heart of our attack, forcing DP to face guard at times,” said Mack. “Mia Foster also had an impressive goal off a rebound.
“Overall, there were a lot of good things happening on the field. Once we have a little more practice under our belts, I look forward to playing DP again in April.”
