Bishop Diego made its debut in a swim meet with Tri-Valley League opponents Foothill Tech and Villanova Prep on Friday, and two Cardinals met CIF consideration times in their events.
“This was the first swim meet in program history, as our inaugural season was cut short by the 2020 Covid shutdown,” said Bishop coach Connor Levoff.
Capri Acquistapace placed second in the varsity girls 100 freestyle and turned in CIF consideration time. She also swam the 200 IM and placed third.
For the boys, Noah Peterson placed third in the 200 Freestyle and posted a CIF consideration time. He also competed in the 50 free.
Drin Ymeri competed in the 200 IM and 100 free, placing 4th in the 100.
BISHOP DIEGO BOYS VOLLEYBALL SWEPT
Bishop Diego was beaten by Harbor High of Santa Cruz, 25-20, 25-16, 25-21, on Friday at the Brick House.
Kai Morphy and Braylon Katers both had eight kills and Rylan Bohnett and Austin Carty chipped in three aces each for the Cardinals (5-9 overall).
“Harbor always has players with good ball control who play the game well,” said coach Dillan Bennett. “Santa Cruz is a strong volleyball community, and it was great that our guys got to play a team like them.
“Our guys are slowly but surely getting better. They don’t see it, because they aquate winning with being better. We’re losing games right now because we haven’t been able to gel like these other teams have. Illness, retreats, and absences have been crushing any progress we’ve been able to make. I think tomorrow is going to be a day where we flip the switch, and start playing better against several quality opponents.”
The Cardinals host their 10-team Cardinal Classic at Bishop Diego on Saturday, with play beginning at 8:30 a.m. Local teams including Dos Pueblos, Laguna Blanca, Carpinteria, and Santa Ynez join Bishop Diego and the visiting teams of Oxnard, Pioneer Valley, St. Joseph’s/Santa Maria, Palma (Salinas) and Harbor (Santa Cruz).
