Kai Morphy scored in 21 points and Tyler Williams had 19 to lead the Bishop Diego boys basketball team to a 61-54 season-opening win over Santa Ynez on Tuesday night.
Landon Lassahn had a double-double for Santa Ynez with 24 points and 10 reobunds. He also dished out three assists. Jackson Ollenburger scored 13 points to go with two blocks and two steals.
The game was close throughout. Bishop Diego went up by 10 at halftime, 36-26, but Santa Ynez cut the margin to three heading into the fourth quarter.
“I felt our effort was there, but we definitely looked like it was our first game,” said Bishop coach James Coronado. “We left some plays out there tonight, but we’ll take a win any time we can get it.”
He praised the defensive effort and rebounding of Morphy as a key to the win.
“When he is playing defense like that, we will be tough to beat even when our shots are not going down.” said Coronado.
