The Bishop Diego girls basketball team held on to its No. 1-ranking in the first CIF-SS polls released in 2020.

The Cardinals (12-5) are still top-ranked in Division 5A after losing last week against 4AA Division teams Holy Martyrs and Xavier Prep at the Avalon Classic on Catalina Island.

Bishop Diego opens Frontier League play against 5A No. 8-ranked La Reina at home on Tuesday.

San Marcos and Dos Pueblos also are ranked in girls basketball. San Marcos, off to its best start in several years at 14-2, is No. 12 in the 4AA Division, while Dos Pueblos (10-4) shares the No. 5 spot with Campbell Hall in the 4A Division.

Four area teams are ranked in boys basketball. Santa Barbara High (9-6) is 12th and San Marcos (8-8) 16th in the 2A Division. The crosstown rivals clash on Friday in a Channel League game at SBCC’s Sports Pavilion.

In Division 4A, Cabrillo (11-6) is ranked eighth and Cate (8-2) is 14th.

In boys soccer, Santa Barbara High moved up to No. 6 in this week’s Division 1 poll. The Dons (11-1-2) open Channel League play at Santa Ynez on Thursday and visit San Marcos on Saturday. Their only loss came against top-ranked San Clemente, 2-1, in the final of the South Torrance Tournament before Christmas.

Dos Pueblos (8-2-2) is ranked second behind Simi Valley in Division 2. The Chargers host Santa Ynez in a Channel League opener on Tuesday.

Dunn (5-0) of Los Olivos is the No. 1 team in Division 6.

San Marcos is No. 2 behind Laguna Beach in the Division 1-2 girls water polo poll. Santa Barbara is ranked 11th and Dos Pueblos 15th.

All three teams are playing in the Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions, Thursday through Saturday. The tournament features several of the top teams in Southern California, including No. 1-ranked Laguna Beach, and the top two teams from the San Diego Section (The Bishop’s and Carlsbad).

The tournament schedule is being revised due to Santa Barbara High’s pool being out of commission because of a broken heater. The bulk of the games will be at the Elings Aquatic Center at Dos Pueblos.
