A big third quarter sparked the Bishop Diego boys basketball team to a 56-51 Tri-Valley League win over St. Bonaventure on Senior Night at the Brick House Gym.
The Cardinals outscored the Seraphs 21-6 in the quarter and held off a St. Bonaventure surge in the final period.
“We started to hit on all cyclinders, playing five-man basketball and, with our team, that can be hard to stop,” said Bishop coach James Coronado. “Our team is starting to gel at the right time. With the late start, and the two-week layoff, this is a great time to come together.”
Ty Williams scored 16 points, Kai Morphy added 14, and senior standout Matthew Cunningham chipped in 12 to lead the Cardinals.
“If our guys share the ball, I don’t think there are very many teams that can stop all of us,” said Coronado. “Marcus Chan and Bryan Trejo get overlooked many times but they are also difficult to stop. So, to key on just one of us is tough. We played great team ball tonight, but a lot of credit to (St. Bonaventure), they never gave up and made it a game in the fourth quarter.”
Nolan Rice scored 12 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter to keep the Seraphs close. A couple of tough rebounds by Morphy and two free throws by Williams sealed the deal.
Bishop plays at Foothill Tech on Monday.
