Bobby Schaeffer shot two under-par rounds and claimed his third straight title at the Santa Barbara City Senior Championships on Friday at the Santa Barbara Golf Club.

Schaeffer captured the gross-score Championship Flight with a 36-hole total of 5-under 135. The former UCSB golf standout who is based out of The Plantation in Indio, fired rounds of 3-under 67 and 2-under 68.

Schaeffer last year also won the two-man, best-ball Santa Barbara Classsic. 

Former Senior champion John Pate (Soule Park Golf Club) finished in second place, five strokes back at even-par 140. John Ziegler (Saticoy Club) and Jesse Perryman (EClub, Monterey Bay) tied for third at 2-over 142 and Iain Macdonald (Industry Hills GC) was fifth at 143.

There was a four-way tie for first place in the net-scoring First Flight. Robert Ball (Victoria Club) prevailed as the champion in a sudden death playoff. Ball, Ian Selbie (Glen Annie Men’s Golf Club), Billy Mandarino (Santa Barbara Men’s Golf Club) and Richard Padilla (Santa Barbara Men’s GC) are carded 147 over 36 holes.

Martin Brown of Sandpiper Golf Club won the Second Flight with a net score of 143, two strokes better than Jerry Anderson (Glen Annie).

In the Women’s Flight, Gail Harling (Montecito Club) led wire-to-wire and won with with a total net score of 148. Karen Hickman (Montecito) was second at 156, followed by Chris Amendt (Golf Club at Sterling Hills) at 157, Susan Trenschel (Santa Barbara Women’s Golf Club) at 158 and Norma Jane Pierce (SBWGC) at 159 to round out the top five.

The next big tournament at the Santa Barbara Golf Club is the reschedule and revised Santa Barbara City Championship.

Twice rescheduled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament will be a 36-hole competition for championship-flight level players (a 5.0 index or lower) on Oct. 17-18. Due to health guidelines, caddies or spectators will be allowed.
