This class will help you learn and refine your plant identification skills as we go over the characteristics that unite some of the most commonly found plant families in backyards\, nurseries\, and at the Garden! Living Collections Curator Christina Varnava will show you how to identify eight commonly encountered native plant families and discuss some of the more famous members of these families. We will also discuss some horticultural practices to help you learn how to make these plants thrive at home. \nThe class will begin with an overview of eight commonly grown CA native plant families and relevant horticultural practices\, followed by a long walk in the Garden for some hands-on identification. No botanical experience or special equipment is necessary. \nPricing:\nGarden Members and Students: $15 \nGeneral Public: $30 \nAbout the Instructor:\nChristina Varnava is the Living Collections Curator at Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. She supports the Living Collection by acquiring new plants and manages a database with nearly a century of records on thousands of plants in the Living Collection. These records are the key to unlocking the unique stories of the plants in the Garden and they also support the vital research and conservation of California native plants. \nChristina studied botany and received a Master’s of Science from Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden and Claremont Graduate University. This guid­ed ver­ti­cal expe­ri­ence will fea­ture five stand­out vin­tages — 2005\, 2016\, 2019\, 2020 and 2022 — show­cas­ing the remark­able aging poten­tial and evolv­ing char­ac­ter of this extra­or­di­nary wine. \nGrown on the high­est ele­va­tion of Purisi­ma Moun­tain Vine­yard\, Block Six was the first sec­tion to be farmed bio­dy­nam­i­cal­ly\, begin­ning in 2002. Its chalky lime­stone soils\, steep slopes\, and south­west expo­sure yield a wine of pro­found struc­ture and puri­ty. Since its inau­gur­al vin­tage\, Block Six has aver­aged 95 points from top crit­ics\, earn­ing its rep­u­ta­tion as the defin­ing expres­sion of Beck­men Syrah. \nThe tast­ing will take place in the Beck­men bar­rel room on the Estate Vine­yard prop­er­ty. DESCRIPTION:The Music Academy of the  West makes history with its first-ever community concert at the newly restored Plaza del Mar Bandshell! \nJoin us for Brass @ the Bandshell\, a free and lively outdoor performance featuring Music Academy brass fellows. Enjoy an energizing program of fanfares and favorites\, including Bernstein’s Suite from West Side Story\, all in the heart of one of Santa Barbara’s most treasured parks. \nBring your blankets\, lawn chairs\, and picnics to soak in the sunshine and sounds. This is the perfect opportunity to introduce the whole family to the joy of live music and the excitement of brass instruments — and to enjoy a musical celebration just steps from the beach. \nInstrument Exploration Station @ 11:45 AM\nAfter the performance\, get to know the brass instruments up close!\nIn partnership with the Santa Barbara Symphony’s Music Van Program\nAll ages welcome. DESCRIPTION:Come join us for an architectural walking tour of historic buildings in downtown Santa Barbara. Hear the rich anecdotal history of buildings such as de la Guerra Adobe\, El Paseo\, Meridian Studios\, and the Lobero Theatre\, among others. \nThe Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara offers its Sabado Architectural Walking Tour each Saturday beginning at 10:00 a.m. The tour leaves from the City Hall steps adjacent to de la Guerra Plaza and is 1.5 – 2 hours long.
