The Carpinteria girls suffered their first loss of the season Wednesday, avoiding a shutout with a late goal in a 3-1 loss on the road to Orcutt Academy.
The game was a rematch of Monday’s 2-2 tie with Orcutt at Carpinteria and completed the season’s home-and-away series with the Spartans. The Warriors are now 0-1-1 on the season.
On Wednesday, Orcutt took a 3-0 lead in the 65th minute after an interception on a bad pass. Carpinteria got the consolation goal late, when freshman Evelyn Lara beat an opponent and played a ball into the center that was sent into the goal by senior Barbara Contreras.
Orcutt’s direct play produced some heavy contact in the box, Warrior coach Freddy Martinez said, “and on two occasions the overly excited warriors awarded the opponent penalties,” in the 26th and 54th minutes.
Some great individual play by Lara created other opportunities, but the Orcutt defense held.
“I was pleased to see our senior leaders work through a disappointing performance with positive communication with the team throughout the match and individual accountability at the end of the match,” Martinez said.
Carpinteria hosts Bishop Diego next Tuesday.
