Tesfa Asmara captured the boys race in 18:35 on Thursday at Viola Fields in Carpinteria, leading Cate to a narrow 26-29 victory over the Warriors.
Carpinteria’s Luke Nakasone was second in 18:47, Hugo Alvarado was fourth (19:12), David Celio was sixth (20:06) and Fernando Barahona took seventh (20:17). Esteban Zapata placed 10th (20:57) for the Warriors.
Cate sophomore Nick Patrick was third in 18:52, followed by freshman Harry McAdam in fifth in 19:57. The race was won by the effort by the fourth and fifth Cate runners, Peter Wood (8th in 20:35) and Jackson Molin (9th in 20:37).
Cate’s Anna DiSorbo won the girls race in 20:01 and Meena Baher of the Rams was second in 20:52. But the heart of the Cate pack took a wrong turn on the second mile, resulting in a disqualification for the Cate team.
A trio of Carpinteria runners finished third, fourth and fifth. Shayla Alvarez was third in 21:43, Monse Alpizar grabbed fourth in 24:04 and Kate Cooney was fifth in the same time of 24:04. Taylor Classen was 10th in 26:43 and Jocolyn Pena took 12th in 29:09.
