Cate qualified its boys and girls cross country teams for the CIF-SS Division 5 finals on Saturday at the prelims in Riverside.
The girls team came in second place in its heat and was second overall in Division 5.
Sophomore co-captains Anna DiSorbo and Meena Baher led the team by finishing 4th in 19:48 and 7th in 20:00, respectively. Freshman Lylie Bechtel continued her furious late-season surge to garner 19th place in 21:05. Fellow freshman Kendall Thorne was 27th in 21:34 and sophomore Kennedy Simpson rounded out Cate’s scoring with a 29th place, 21:36.
On the boys side, eight teams in each of three heats qualified for the finals, and the Rams were eighth in their heat. Senior co-captain Tesfa Asmara had another strong race and finished 3rd in 16:50. Sophomore Nick Patrick surged in the last mile and finished 25th in 17:57. Sophomores Andrew Busse and Peter Wood and junior Shion Kato finished in a tight pack to nail down a finals spot. Their places and times were 51, 52 and 54, in 19:04, 19:05 and 19:06, respectively.
