Cate and Thacher went at it in the Frontier League basketball opener, battling through three overtimes before the host Toads prevailed, 64-59, on Saturday.
“As a coach, I want this one back,” said Cate’s Andy Gil. “Thacher is a tough team who thankfully we get to play again. Too many turnovers and missed free throws. Thacher played harder than us today and were the aggressor and out-boarded us.”
The Toads jumped out to a 20-6 in the first quarter, but Cate roared back in the second quarter, 19-6, to trail 28-25 at halftime.
“We didn’t play to our potential but there was some silver lining.” Gil said. “Our bench did an incredible job tonight. They were a huge part of our second-quarter run to cut the lead at half. I credit junior John Tyler and senior John Shelburne for being our sparks off the bench.”
The Rams had four starters foul out in regulation, so the bench kept the team in the game through the overtimes.
Cate is now 8-3 overal and 0-1 in league.
