Cate played a strong Artesia squad to a scoreless draw through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods before falling in a penalty-kick shootout, 5-4, in a CIF-SS Division 5 first-round boys soccer playoff match on Thursday night in Hawaiian Gardens.
Cate goalkeeper Tyler Martinez got his hand on three Artesia penalty kicks but couldn’t keep them out of the net.
“This was an incredible game to be a part of,” said Cate coach Peter Mack. “It was two highly skilled teams with similar strategies and playing styles going head to head. And the result shows that it was about as even as it could get.”
The playoff defeat was the final game for Cate seniors Andrew Mabon, Shion Kato, Layton Harding, and Will Deardorff
Cate finishes its shortened season during the pandemic with a 5-2-1 record.
