Cate freshman GK Matias had 13 saves in a 1-0 shutout of Coachella Valley at home Tuesday to advance to the third round of the CIF-SS Division 6 playoffs.
Rams sophomore Seb Sutch scored the game’s only goal, in the 73rd minute. The scoring play started with a corner kick from senior Daniel Boateng that went to freshman Samuel Anum, who passed to senior Peter wood. Wood deflected the ball to the center of the box, where Sutch poked it in to the net.
“The Rams were able to preserve the lead with a solid defensive team effort,” Rams coach Jorge Reynoso said. “Matias came up with a couple of critical saves in the last few minutes when Coachella threw everyone up in search of the equalizer.
“Today we had a solid team effort and we are meshing at the right time.”
Cate travels to Lancaster on Friday to face Littlerock High School for a third-round game.
