Cate’s doubles team of Grace Fuss and Carol Cai won two matches at the CIF-SS Northern Regional individual tournament on Monday in Carpinteria and advanced to the Southern Section Round of 32.

After receiving a first-round bye, Fuss/Cai defeated Elizabeth Nguyen and Ember Mission from Oxnard, 6-1, 6-1, and knocked off Hannah Dever/Grace Rogers from Camarillo, 7-6 (8), 6-1 to move on to the Seal Beach Tennis Center on Dec. 3.

“Carol and Grace were so close to making sectionals last season, with just a point or two standing between them and the win against Samantha Now and Essence Wang of Westlake,” said Cate coach Trevor Thorpe. “That team is the #1 seed for our region this year, so clearly that was a tough draw last season, so I’m glad they were up for giving it another go together in doubles as seniors.

“Carol has been here before and I really can’t overstate just how good of a doubles player she is. Grace is still relatively new to doubles play, but she’s been essentially unstoppable all season, and she’s starting to understand and execute our doubles strategies at another level from what we’ve seen from her in the past.”

Charlotte Ryan and Catherine Kelly of Santa Barbara High opened the tournament with a win over Lainey Brown and Reesa Segovia (Buena High) 6-1, 6-1. The Dons duo lost in the second round against Alyssa Bojenkva and Emily Redwood (Campbell Hall) 6-3 7-5.

The San Marcos pair of Samantha Forster and Bella Munoz lost in the first round against the team of Whitney Clarfied/Julia Levin from Malibu.

In singles, Kayla Kling of Cabrillo won her first-round match over Chloe Steinfield of Oakwood (6-0, 6-1) and lost against Camarillo’s Hana McKenney (6-0, 6-1). Katherine Monroy of Laguna Blanca defeated Tai Nagar of de Toldeo (6-0, 6-2) before falling against Annette Robertson of West Ranch (6-0, 6-4).

Natasha Gill of San Marcos fell in the first round against Devyn Marinos of Campbell Hall, 6-4, 6-3.
