Cody Pearce of Dos Pueblos won three matches to advance to the semifinals at the CIF-SS Coastal Division Wrestling Championships at Westminster High on Friday.
Pearce pulled out a double-overtime win in his last match of the day to gain a semifinal berth.
“The fact that he went 3-0 for the day is truly impressive and a reflection of his competitiveness and resilience,” said coach Jesse Plowman.
Also advancing to Saturday are Francisco Espinosa, Ryan Risdall, Sammy Ramos, Sylis Penniman and Ivan Medina.
Dos Pueblos is sitting in seventh place out of 49 schools in the division.
“It’s clear that our team is competing at a high level and we should be proud of what they have achieved so far,” said Plowman.
In CIF-SS girls individual wrestling, DP’s Victoria Bernard reached the semifinals at the Central Division Tournament.
She won three matches, scoring a pin over Nayeli Ventura of Nuview Bridge in the second match and beating Alycia Reyes of Excelsior by a 14-9 decision in her third match.
She takes on the second seeded Estella Wade of Sultana in Saturday’s semifinals at 111 pounds.
“Victoria wrestled tough as nails today,” said coach Matthew Bernard. “Her superior technique, drive, and composure separated her from her opponents. We’re excited to see her bring that same intensity to tomorrow’s matches.”
Ayssa Warner won her first match of the day by pin and lost the next two.
“She has come a long way as a first-year wrestler,” said coach Bernard. “Pinning her first-round opponent is a significant accomplishment and showcases Alyssa’s hard-earned skills and determination.”
