Junior point guard Danae Miller scored a career-high 31 points for the UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball team, but the Gauchos were defeated by San Jose State, 73-70 in a non-conference matchup on Friday night at the Thunderdome.

San Jose State turned a four-point deficit at the break into a six-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter after a 25-point period, led by guard Ayzhiana Basallo’s 14 points. She converted on all eight of her free throw attempts in the quarter.

San Jose State kept UCSB at a distance for much of the fourth quarter, until freshman center Ila Lane made it a two-possession game with 2:11 left in regulation, cutting the Spartan lead to 69-65.

The Gauchos had momentum on their side, and Coco Miller delivered a jumper to pull the Gauchos within two with 1:41 to go.

One Spartan miss later, Danae Miller sank a trey to put the Gauchos ahead for the first time in the fourth quarter at the 1:13 mark.

San Jose State would regain control of the game when Fieme’a Hafoka pulled up for the go-ahead jumper with 47 seconds left.

UCSB couldn’t come up with a response in its next possession, and Hafoka drew a foul and converted on both of her free throws to seal the victory for San Jose State.

Lane hauled in 16 rebounds in the loss, representing 37% of the team’s boards in the entire game.

UCSB faces USC at home on Monday night.
