Ramon Mejia, a call-up from the junior varsity team, stepped up big for the Dos Pueblos varsity soccer team, scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Quartz Hill in the opener at the Hart Tournament on Thursday.
The Chargers battled Granada Hills to a 0-0 draw in their second game, and the result earned them the No. 1 seed out of their pool.
DP coach Matt York lauded the play of Robert Montalvo at center back and at defensive center midfielder against Granada Hills. He also praised Hayden Carlson and Kokis Silva for their solid minutes on the pitch.
In the opener, DP scored the game-winning goal off a busted play. in the last five minutes. Leo Rubio took the ball down the right flank, but he crossed the ball beyond the back post. Teammate Kaiser Kurexi corraled the ball and found Mejia in front of the goal. Mejia put his shot away for his first varsity goal.
Dos Pueblos (6-2) is back in action on Friday.
