Ariana Tapia scored a career-high 16 points on Wednesday and Mikayla Butzke racked up 14 points and 12 rebounds to guide Dos Pueblos to a 69-25 rout of Trinity in the Nordhoff girls basketball tournament.
The Chargers (7-2) led 21-9 at halftime, then blew things open with a 48-16 advantage in the second half.
“We missed our first nine shots and fell behind by seven before we settled down,” said DP coach Phil Sherman. “Then we went on a 10-0 run to take a 21-9 halftime lead. In the second half, we forced a number of turnovers and blew the game wide open. Ariana Tapia and Leila Chisholm forced a number of turnovers that led to easy transition shots in the third quarter. Mikayla Butzke scored eightof her 14 points in the pivotal third quarter. She got a lot of baskets on offensive rebounds and it was great to get some scores from inside the paint.”
Tapia recorded five steals for the Chargers.
“Ariana gave us a nice lift when some of our starters had an off-night,” Sherman noted. “It was great to see her relaxed while being disruptive on defense. Lillie Mier looked comfortable while playing three different positions. Her 11 points were pivotal for us tonight.”
Dos Pueblos will play Moorpark on Thursday at the Nordhoff Tourney.
