The Dos Pueblos doubles team of Cami Chou and Chloe Harrah pulled out a 7-5 first-round victory en route to a sweep, leading the Chargers to a 10-8 girl tennis win over San Marcos in a Channel League match on Wednesday.
Chou/Harrah won their next two sets, 6-1, 6-1.
“Today we knew that SM would be a tight match for us,” said DP coach Laura Housinger. “It was truly a team effort to get the 10-8 win.”
Katz Scherz won two of her sets (6-0, 6-3, 0-6) to key the win.
“Kate Scherz was instrumental in fighting for point after point in her singles sets,” said Housinger. “Besides being a tennis player, she competes in varsity soccer, runs weekend races, and is an all-around standout athlete. She really stepped up and helped with two set wins.”
Dos Pueblos is 3-1 overall and in league.
San Marcos coach Jonny Sapp expects his girls will be stronger in the second half of the league season.
“Being a completely new team this year, we now have gained more experience and will make the adjustments we need to finish strong in the second half of the season.”
No. 1 single player Natasha Gill swept her three sets and Cristina Wickline won two sets, including an upset of DP’s No.1 Alessa Somer.
The No. 1 doubles team of Charlotte Manion/Helena Manar two of three sets.
“They started off super slow and lost a set they probably shouldn’t have, but came back with a vengeance and won the next two sets,” said Sapp. “Like I said, we know what we need to work on to get the dub next time around and we won’t go down without a fight in the second of half of the season.”
