Dos Pueblos stormed back from a 12-7 deficit in the fifth set and defeated Golden Valley, 18-16, to win a thrilling non-league boys volleyball match on the road Thursday night. The match scores were 27-25, 26-24, 21-25, 24-16, 18-16.

“That was a match that reminds us why we love this sport so much, the competitive back and forth at the end of the fifth set,” said DP coach Ehren Hug.

The Chargers never stopped battling when things looked dimmed.

“We kept scooping up balls and swinging smartly to get to 13-14, when Sean Ortiz rifled one through the block on the backside. We kept trading points, eventually taking it 18-16,” said Hug.

He noted that the big gym at Golden Valley allowed players lots of room to chase down balls and keep plays alive.

“Just incredible hustle from all these young men. It was an exciting environment. I’m proud of the end of all five sets tonight,” said Hug.

Ortiz led the Chargers with 18 kills, Baylor Huyck had 15 and Kayode Lovejoy-Hall added 13. Setter Kaiser Kurexi dished out 43 assists and Owen Schott added 12. Emmett Ehrnstein was the team dig leader with 16.

“I have to give some praise towards the setters tonight, Kaiser Kurexi and Owen Schott,” said Hug. “Both were super decisive tonight and played great defense both at the net and in the back row. They have been working extremely hard in practice and the growth showed toinight in a tough and competitive match.”

Dos Pueblos goes into the mandated suspension of the high school spring sports season with records of 5-2 overall and 1-1 in Channel League.
