A driver was killed Wednesday in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 101 along the Gaviota Coast, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The rollover crash occurred at about 7:40 a.m. in the southbound lanes near Arroyo Hondo.

The male driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was declared dead at the scene, CHP Capt. Cindy Pontes told Noozhawk.

The driver was southbound in a Ford Escape when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle drifted to the left and up an embankment in the center median, Pontes said.

The vehicle subsequently overturned and came to rest on its left side, partially blocking the left-hand lane.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries, Pontes said.

The left southbound lane was shutdown, causing a backup of traffic in the area. It was expected to be reopened by about 10:30, Pontes said.

The driver’s name was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
