Emergency personnel responded Friday afternoon to a report of an injured hang-glider or para-glider in the mountains above Santa Barbara.

Firefighters from Santa Barbara county and city and Montecito were dispatched at about 1:25 to the incident off Gibraltar Road, said county fire Capt. Daniel Bertucelli.

The patient, a man in his 30s who suffered a lower back injury, was reported to be several hundred yards from the roadway, according to emergency radio traffic.

He was able to use his cell phone to call 9-1-1 for assistance, Bertucelli said.

A county helicopter and Search & Rescue Team members were dispatched to the scene to assist with the rescue.

The patient, who suffered moderate injuries, was being hoisted into the aircraft for transport to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, Bertucelli said.

His name and details on his condition were not available.
