The passing and defense of libero Erin Curtis allowed second-seeded Dos Pueblos to open up its attack and sweep visiting Viewpoint, 25-15, 25-15, 25-15, in a CIF-SS Division 4 first-round girls volleyball playoff match on Thursday at Sovine Gym.
The victory sends the Chargers (25-9) on the road to the high desert town of Phelan to play Serrano in the second round on Saturday.
“Erin Curtis was incredibly steady for us running the back line, which allowed us to run a spread offense,” said DP coach Megan O’Carroll.
Portia Sherman led the attack with 11 kills, Chloe Hoffman put away 10 kills, Makeila Cervantes added six and middle Lily Mires had a big night with five kills and two blocks.
“We did a really good job using all of our hitters,” said Sherman.
Setter Natali Flint dished out 31 assists and served five aces.
The Chargers hadn’t played in two weeks. Their final Channel League match against Lompoc last week was canceled due to the Alisal Fire.
“It was really great to get back on the court after not playing for two weeks. The girls were itching to compete,” said O’Carroll. “I’m super proud of our defensive efforts tonight and thought our defense on the net was really strong. We were getting a ton of block-touches and stopping a lot from coming over.”
