Anthony Gutierrez scored in the first two minutes on Monday night and Hayden Carlson added another first-half score as Dos Pueblos shut out Channel Islands 2-0 in a boys soccer game at Scott O’Leary Field.
“Channel Islands is a very strong team that came in with a lot of momentum,” said DP coach Matt York. “I’m proud of our boys for continuing to rise to the challenge of tougher and tougher opponents. We continued our hot starts with a goal in the first two minutes when we put high pressure on their defense which created a turnover from pressure by our forward Kaiser Kurexi. In the ensuing scramble, Leo Rubio was able to get just enough on the ball to center it to his counterpart on the other side of the field, Anthony “Bubba” Gutierrez, for the first score of the match.”
The Chargers improved to 5-1.
“That goal seemed to awaken the beast that CI is, they were relentless in front of our net and match MVP GK Jorge Dominguez-Soto kept rebuffing them time and again,” said York. “Whether it was laying out for fingertip saves or stopping blasts to the chest, he played with confidence and poise to keep them out of the scoring column.
“Our second goal was almost a carbon copy of a goal on Friday when senior captain Hayden Carlson received a pass from Aldo Becerril and streaked past the defense before blasting it to the back of the net. It was so remarkably similar to the last game that our bench did a bit of a double-take.
York singled out the play of two sophomores — defender Fred Jones and Joshua Guevara Tahuite.
The Chargers return to action on Thursday at Pioneer Valley, starting at 5 p.m.
