In Memoriam: Fernando Espinoza Oct. 5, 1955-Oct. 21, 2023.
On Saturday morning, Oct. 21, 2023, we bade farewell to a charismatic soul, Fernando Espinoza, whose vibrant spirit was called to the heavens while he was enjoying his weekly bike ride in the foothills of Santa Barbara.
Born in San Diego, California, on Oct. 5, 1955, to the loving embrace of Aurora and Humberto Espinoza, Fernando’s journey through life was nothing short of remarkable.
He attended Our Lady of Guadalupe School, and later moved on to the halls of Santa Barbara Junior High and ultimately Santa Barbara High School. His inquisitive mind and warm heart endeared him to all who crossed his path.
Fernando’s professional endeavors were as diverse as his interests. From working at Jordano’s to Sansum Clinic and then Cottage Hospital, his dedication knew no bounds. And finally working for the Santa Barbara School District, where students were touched by his wisdom and compassion.
In 1992, the tapestry of his life found new hues when he married the love of his life Maureen Fuentes. Their union was blessed with the birth of their daughter Michelle, a testament to the love they shared.
Fernando’s zest for life was reflected in his active lifestyle, with cycling reigning supreme among his passions.
The Eastern Sierra’s held a special place in his heart. He reveled in the serenity of fishing with his family and friends during his planned yearly trips to the June Lake Loop. Our yearly family trips, and hiking up to Fern Lake will never be the same.
Fernando’s wanderlust knew no bounds, and historical sites around the world beckoned to him. His recent journey to the heart of Paris and the echoes of Normandy with Maureen was a testament to their love, celebrating 30 years of marriage that were filled with adventure and devotion.
In the tapestry of his life, Fernando was predeceased by his dear father, mother, and younger brother, Mario. Their spirits now unite in the afterlife, watching over those they left behind.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories, held close by his adoring wife Maureen; their daughter Michelle; and his surviving family members brother Bert; sister Rosa; nephews Mario, Nathan, Stephen; and nieces Megan and Lisa.
In the tapestry of our existence, angels often appear in the most unexpected places, and the family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the kind Samaritan who offered a compassionate hand at Cathedral Oaks Road and Kellogg that fateful morning.
A funeral mass, celebrating the life of our beloved “Fernie,” will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 3 at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 5444 Hollister Ave., Goleta.
In the memory of Fernando Espinoza, may we find inspiration to embrace life with the same charisma and zest that he so passionately shared with the world.
